guys...you can skip shift as long as you're not doing it overly quickly. The synchros do have to work harder. But I doubt that they'll wear overly quickly unless you're going 2nd to 5th in a split second every time.
The smaller the gear delta, the less you need a synchronizer. The less you use the synchronizer, the less it wears.
The opposite is true for large gear deltas.
