[QUOTE=RED MX5,Oct 14 2006, 08:16 PM]Most likely all you did was put a tiny bit of extra wear on your synchros.

i bought my car with with 13K miles and really need to warm the car up and hit vtech during the first two gears or else it grinds in 3rd. Can this be a result of skip shifting from previous owner or is this normal with our s2k?

Properly warming up the vehicle through conservative driving before driving it hard is best.

Are you saying you can't shift without grinding unless you engage vtec?

I warm the car up for like 15-20 min/when 8 bars hit. What i mean is if i first drive the car i have to rev it up high/vtech for it not to grind into 3rd but soon after their are no more grinds. This only happens when i first drive the car. However if i dont rev it up, it grind on 2nd/3rd but after say about 5 min of driving all the grind go away.

PS before i have warmed her up for about 15-20 minutes, i rev her a few times to get her insides going. And sometimes i run through the gear too while stationary/idle.

This is disheartening to read, if a manufacturer really feels this way:

"If you've got a vehicle in your shop for repeated
damage to the synchronizers, go for a test-drive
with your service customer to see if he or she is
guilty of skip shifting. If that's the case, remind
him or her skip shifting can be an expensive habit
to break. Any repairs due to skip shifting may be
reviewed and debited by your DPSM."

I just shift sequentially, no problems there.

Plus, it's such a joy to shift this car. Why not do it?
Exactly. I wonder if some of these guys skip foreplay too.

~$600 for a used transmission + install is probably the cheapest route.

There are lots of diy maintenance items to check off before giving up on a transmission. Check the FAQ in Under the Hood.
The only problem here is you don't know what the previous owner of the tranny did to it. Suppose he skip shifted as well?

I'm guilty of it. I ruined my 5-6th gear synchro in only 15,000 miles of doing this. Never ruined any other Honda/Acura's doing it though...

A new 5-6th gear set is only a little over $200 at the dealer. Probably about 3 times the labor to repair than to replace the tranny though.

Damn... This has been a really eye opening topic and Im glad I read it before it was too late. Im a relatively new S2000 owner and Ive always been a fan of the skip shift and I do it on a daily basis in my S. Also when Im on the highway in 6th and want to pass somebody I down skip shift straight from 6th to 3rd because at 100k when I shift down into 3rd it lands just before vtec kicks in and I get that extra power to shoot me past who ever Im taking over in seconds. But I guess Im going to have to stop doing this from now on =/

JamieP, the only issue you have to worry about is skipping a gear when upshifting. No issue's at all when downshifting.
