???? I'm sorry folks, but there is nothing wrong with skip shifting if the speed range and rpm are appropriate for the selected gear. Think about it; the synchros do not know what gear the tranny was in before the shift. Just don't lug the engine when skipping an up shift and rev match on the down shifts.

double clutching is ok as it matches the tranny speed to the engine speed. rev matching however, still will wear out your synchros, it just makes shifting easier

Thanks for bringing this one back. Always enjoy reading RED MX5's posts and also glad to learn that I'm on the same page as him and billman, regarding this topic.

I can shift without a clutch too!

From experience (Driven 120K+ mi on my S2), I'd recommend avoiding the skip shift from 2nd to 5th. All others I had no problems whatsoever, giving that I used some common sense in that I wont skip from 2nd to 6th if I'm going 35MPH, etc. This common sense is something you learn more with the years as you develop the feel.

Did you read my post? Transmission shaft speed is not always the same as engine speed. The transmission does, in a sense, know what gear the car was in because of the shaft speed difference.

the fact that this car revs to 9000rpm and rpm changes between gears are much more drastic than in any other car that revs to say 6000rpm(just an example). synchros are the weak link in honda transmission due to their higher rev'ing nature..

bottom line: if you like your transmission, don't skip gears. or if you're stubborn and will do it anyways, double clutch it. if you're too stubborn to do that, don't complain when you're locked out of 5th or 6th gear. match engine speed to tranny speed and there should be no issues.

Plus, it's such a joy to shift this car. Why not do it?

That's one way to do it, and what I normally do, but there are also other alternatives. This one is pretty safe though, as long as one is familiar enough with transmission feel to be able to tell when the synchros for the gear that isn't being engaged are up to speed. If the touch is a little on the heavy side it's pretty easy to engage the gear fully. LOL, well, I guess that doesn't hurt anything either, and it's another way to skip gears. IE: Say we're in second; Clutch in, engage thrid, engage forth, then bilp the throttle (if necessary) and release the clutch. I doubt Honda would even consider that "skipping gears."
Yup, same thing here, or, let the engine revvs drop and properly match the engine speed to the gear you are going to next....takes knowing your car though.
