Default Soft Top Tear!

Okay so lately my top is acting really weird and it won't go down all the way. I think the elastic bands lost its pull and so its folds differently as i put it down.

Today, i was putting it down and it got stuck midway for a second then i hear a "snap". When i look back, there was a frickin tear right above where the passenger side hinge is. The area on the driver side also seem to be wearing down.

Has this happened to any of u guys before? I've heard about tear on the sides of the top but not here. My warranty already ran out so i guess the dealers wouldnt be much help. Would they at least replace the two elastic bands? What can i use to seal the tear? Preferably something that would hide the rip.

Heres some pix.

Thanks!

For the tear, Permatex makes a "Leather and Vinyl Repair Kit" that may do the job for you. You could probably pick one up at a local auto supply store.

For the elastic strap replacement you might want to consider the fix from the link below.

I used an iron-on patch (and a body work dolly to back up the iron) to repair and strengthen from the inside. I used a little superglue (because that is what I had on hand) to patch on the outside so the fabric would not unravel any further. Rain tested and no leaks.

Just an alternate method to get the same results.

I just posted a thread about the latches rubbing the top and causing damage, looks like yours is doing the same thing.

I too notice that my top retractes up, then a loud snap, and the top continues to go back. I swear taht it wasn't that loud when I bought the thing, but I could be mistaken. I plan on taking mine in to be looked at abouty the latches rubbing though, I'll try to check out another S2k and see if its as loud.

thanx for the help!!

DJFriar. I think the reason why the latches are rubbin is becuase your bands are too loose and isnt folding correctly. You should check out the link that trapper provided. Bought mine!

Do youre elastic bands have any tension? I replaced mine last year when I replaced the top. Went for brand new bands, pretty stiff, and a half inch wider. Top folds flawlessly and actually, goes down farther than and other S2000 I have seen yet. Try it.
