I hope they do spectacularly well. I'd far prefer a proliferation of roadsters to the current SUV craze, or the 4-door attempt at a sports car idea. If GM gets the drivetrain right, they have a winner on their hands (especially with the Saturn Sky's styling). No need for some elitist, "my roadster is better than yours" sentiment here. I think it's great to see more options in the segment.
100%

This attitude that the only reliable cars are built overseas is getting old, real old. It's a global market. Honda's are made in the USA, Chrysler makes cars in Mexico. GM even got a Honda motor for one of it's cars (Saturn VUE????) It is NOT an easy division between import and domestic anymore.

The first year of EVERY car is problematic. Even the S2000 had a LOT of bugs and problems with the 2000 MY.

The first year of the RX-8 almost killed it before it even came out.

The first year of the 350z had some problems.

I am VERY happy to see GM make something that is not a boring econobox or a $50,000 sports car. There IS room between those two things somewhere. (Now bring back the Camaro and Firebirds.)

Wow, a negative response and a ton of brand bashing from S2ki.com? Who woulda thunk it.

Looks like GM is offering a nice package for the price. Also going to say the sky is very pleasing to the eye.

Tidbits I've seen about the car that I havent seen posted here...

-Weight should be 2800-2900
-A/C is an option, as well as LSD (which should be real cheap)
-Should be priced below 20k, somewhere in the 19,000s /looks for more hairs to split
-Based on preliminary miata specs it should be a bit slower than the new miata but probably a good 4 grand cheaper as well.
-big wheels, 18x8 or so. Sure not *HUGE* wheels but considering its a sub 20k roadster type car those are big, and wide too. If it is able to compete with the miata in SCCA it will be because of the massive rubber you'll be able to put under it (well massive for its size...)

To those that say it's a girls car I totally disagree. Girls cars are generally cutesy FWD cars with few redeeming performance qualities. This car isnt FWD, it isn't cutesy (most girls I know would say its hideous but definately not cutesy) and its a RWD 'sports car' (if you follow the basic definition of a sports car). Girls cars are VW beetle cabrio, v6 mustang convertables and chrysler sebring convertables. This is just Pontiac/Saturn trying to build *something* that enthusiasts on a budget will actually give half a shit about. Hell for 19 grand I can't think of a better new car on the market if you're looking for something sporty.

*shrug* I like it. The pontiac version is ugly as hell and the saturn version looks wierd but I'm just happy that honda and mazda aren't the only two car companies making decent affordable sportscars now that toyota is discontinueing the mr2 spyder.

I think both look good, It looks well designed, I like the clamshell hood and the hidden top.

Around 20K seems like good deal to me.

I think both are great looking cars, maybe as good looking or even better than our S. Definitely more modern. It seems like they will have decent performance too. For some of you haters, stop being so insecure.

I like the Solaris better, but I'd have to do something about the grille, that's the only part that bugs me, you cut that thing open and you've got an american made TVR, and with a hard core turbo or super, you've got an S for 5-10 grand less.

At $20K, why even worry about GM reliability? Just buy 2 so you'll always have a spare.

Pretty picture. I just hope that's not salt water.

I like it. Sure, it's cute, but so is the S2000 ... that's what gets the ladies interested. I has moderate performance more in line with traditional roadsters, and doesn't pretend to be anything more; I see those as good things.

I think it will be great for middle aged guys who used to drive Firebirds and now have a sedan for a family car, but can afford an extra car. It's a lot easier to justify $20k than $30k for a weekend car.
