I pulled some springs spacers off my friend's Evo IX MR with almost 50k miles a few weeks ago! The problem is, by not allowing the spring to compress all the shock was sent through the spring perches and top-hats; both (on each side of the car) were cracked and badly damaged
Ey hello!from Barcelona...
I was looking for this problem in internet and I have found it!!!
My car had the same problem with only 2000km, I managed to solve by myself removing the spacers. Now a day my S2000 has 23000km and has another problem that I think its caused for the first spacers problem.
I don't know how much time the car has this problem.
Now the car height is not the same everywhere, In fact the left side is 1,5 cm higest than the other side. In Honda workshop told me that it can be the right shocks. But I don't understand why, because the only part which can modify de height is the spring.
This Monday honda will change the front-right shock in warranty.
What's your opinion about this? what other possibities could be?
Thanks!

I'm far from the first, and sadly won't be the last... but I bet I've got one of the highest miles for this to be noticed.
As I'm prepping for a trip to the Dragon this weekend, I have the car up on jackstands changing trans oil etc. I jsut happen to roll under the driver's side wheel well and look up, to see the dreaded spring spacer. Absolutely unbelieveable.
Just off the top of my head, the many times this should have been seen:
- Delivery inspection for first owner
- Who knows how many Honda vists for first owner (15k miles)
- 5 Honda visits with me as owner, including 24k check-up
- 4 alignments
- 2 body shop visits (included suspension check due to off-road excursion)
- countless times of me under it, including changing brakes, replacing brake lines, even changing the clutch!
This is disgraceful for everyone involved, most notably myself. I even stood there and laughed at another guy when someone noticed them at a meet (he had only had his a few hundred miles from new).
38,000 miles! It's been through 4 trips to the dragon, 2 agressive track days, a couple autocross events, numerous road trips, 130mph+ a couple times...
In the end, I guess I'm lucky it didn't turn out worse. I doubt Honda would do anything at this point to make amends, plus I have myself to blame quite nearly as much. Going to take it out now, which will throw off alignment for the Dragon trip this weekend. Nothing to do about it at this point though. I'll have to get re-aligned next week...
congratualtions for having one of the highest miles on this.
i know someone who has been advised to modify suspension countless times since the car is "unstable", brought to the track by "racing gurus" charging good money for "track driving training" and been convinced of the "instability" of the stock car, gone up high speed and realise stock suspension is "scary at high speed". Gone to high end S2000 parts dealers/workshop who serviced the car on a regular basis.
Then at 35,000 kms realised it was due to spring spacers.
Good luck to those "driving instructors" and "high end workshops" bah.
