As stated before, the start button is not just a "gimmick," it's there so that if you stall or spin, you can simply re-start with your left hand while getting back in gear with your right hand. As you can imagine, this is something that could be valuable when speed is an issue. It's the same reason Porsches have their ignition on the LH side of the steering column, and is different in concept from most other cars with "on/off" buttons, where the car is simply treated like any other household appliance.

I've stalled my car before and never had to re-twist the ignition, and have in fact used the start button while getting myself in the correct gear with the other hand. So, it seems that it does have a purpose other than just coolness.
Have you stalled it spinning? Because on multiple occasions this has happened to me and had to turn on/off the car. If Honda were so concerned about the extra milisecond it takes for your hand to get into first gear, they might have ensured the car would completely shut down after a spin.

Even if it does give you that extra hand, I'm still going to say that Honda's intent was to be a gimmick.

And this thread continues to go off topic. List of other cars with a start button.

I was just reading in Motor Trend (gag, I got the subscription for free) about a 1949 Cadillac 62, equipped with a start button from the factory.

As I've stated before, I've never needed to start my car without being in it. I've owned many cars that could start without the clutch - it's not something I miss in the S2k.

I guess it's funny that people "trip" when you start it up without depressing the clutch, but to me it's just not that fascinating. It would be more retarded to do a mod that I don't need than to do it just to make people "trip".

Guaranteed - as perfect as you think you are - one day you'll forget it's in gear and try to start the car...I just hope you don't crack your lip on the curb when it happens.
I have to agree with Not Sure. Seems like a bad idea.

I can just see you trying to be cool and reach in and turn the key, and your car takes off down the road with nobody in it.

We all do stupid things some times.

Yes the push button start is a gimmick. I remember reading an interview with one of the guys on the design team who said it's only there to give it the "feeling" of a purpose built track car and to pay homage to the old school.

Back on topic the 1965 Jaguar type E had a push button starter.

It isn't a case of trying to be cool. It is for convenience and less wear during cold start-ups. Is it really that hard to make sure the car is in neutral?

So, from the looks of it... the S2000 was the first mass produced car to use an engine start button in over 35 years, ya?

just to see, i purposely stalled my car today and tried to start it without turning the key, just pressing the button. voila, it worked. as you can see i have an 04
we aren't talking about simply stalling the car, I've done that too and it fires right back up. We're talking about a violent spin out in which you and the car were subjected to some serious Gs. In THOSE cases you end up having to turn the ignition off for some reason.

There is no need to turn the key back, the ignition is either on or off... and it doesn't shut off from a stall. However, a hot stalled engine will require some extra cranking to fire back up, so maybe he just didn't crank it enough.

^^ I don't even have to push the clutch! little off topic but I'll brag anyway I got rid of the clutch interlock and LOVE it! The best part is being able to start the car without getting in, highly recommended mod.
sounds really interesting. how can i do this mod? is there a link for it anywhere? thanks

I think all the new cars with buttons start AND stop the engine. I wonder why honda did not do this.

Why is the s2k the ONLY 1999+ Honda with a start button??
Honda has just started putting start buttons in their cars, namely the TL and the ZDX...which I think is all for now?

Here's the TL start button...
