okay... i'm looking for a radar detector that doesn't have to sit on the dash, windshield or visor. i love the design and form factor of the BEL Vector LR Remote -- but gather that its range is a fraction of the Valentine1, Bel 980 and Passport 8500.

any suggestions?

(after my recent 280/twin turbo chasing escapade i figure i need one now).

Check out a K40.
Not sure about the numbers, as far as performance, but its definitely stealth. The sensors go under your bumpers, and the lights for the unit are actually built into your speedo assembly. I had one in a previous car.

Worked great for me.

Why are you limiting yourself to one that doesn't go on the windshield or dash? From everything I've read, the built-in radar detectors are generally the worst performing of all radar detectors.

You can wire a regular detector into the car's electrical system and it's not really that much trouble. I can see why the convenience of a built-in detector would be attractive, but I'm not willing to give up sensitivity for that convenience. That's the decision you need to make.

wickerbill - I agree with you.
I had the K40, and the stealth appeal was nice, but I will be buying the Valentine1 for the stook.

Cost of an installed K40 is anywhere from $600 to over $1000 for a complete system.
Thats a lot of money for something that doesn't perform as well as the Valentine and Passport.

Like I said, I liked mine when I had it, but would I spend the money again? NO!
For half the money you get a better unit.

Being from VA I can certainly think of some reasons

Are there any stealth models that you can purchase and install yourself?

I am a long time user of Cincinatti Microwave products, thae parent company of Passport. I currently run an SR-1. If you go this route, and I highly recommend it, I'll will walk you through the install. The front and rear receptors are very nondescript and unobtrusive. If you can't pick one up for 5 bills let me know....I can.

P.S. Perfromance is superb.......

I'll Second Utah's post and add that the user interface for the SR1 is just like the 8500... very easy to program and use. I also installed mine myself and can provide some pics if you like of how i did it. I would recommend against the K40 as they have a very high false alert rate... thus making the system useless. One other thing to consider.. I believe the SR1 is not VG2(detector-detector) immune.. i know i set off V1s under the right circumstances.

But what i'd really like would be an SR2.... SR1 ala 8500 detection technology...

Ouch ... that would certainly make it near useless around here ...

Have fun,
