Successful Strategy for getting a NEW soft top
Hey guys,
Thought I'd share the resolution of my issue with this now acknowledged TSB. I bought my S2000 certified used last year from Burns Honda in Marlton, NJ (it's a 2005) and bought an additional extended warranty through The Mechanic.
The certified used warranty extended certain parts of the original factory warranty for another year after my purchase (or 12,000 miles past the purchase mileage). However, much to my chagrin, the certified used warranty is actually a gutted version of the original factory warranty does not cover anything pertaining to the convertible top. Not the locks, the assembly, top materials, nada. The original factory warranty expired a year ago.
So, I consulted with my extended warranty company. Unfortunately, because it is an acknowledged TSB, they couldn't do diddly either, essentially passing the ball back to Honda. And even if they could, all they could reimburse me for was the locks and assembly, not the top itself (which is now damaged thanks to this defect).
After a few days of back and forth with the Burns Honda guys, I thankfully was extended said "goodwill" as listed on the TSB. I know this thread mentions dealerships reimbursing 75%, but mine was slightly less, it was an even 50/50 split -- must be the recession.
Anyway, it's definitely better than nothing. Long story short, my cut of the repair comes to a little over $1000 after taxes (that's including labor and parts). I'll be getting my S2000's top fully replaced tomorrow, with a repair time of 2 days.
Needless to say, I'm not exactly too enthralled that I have to drop another grand on the car less than a year after purchase, but on the same token, it could've been worse...I think anyone here, if given the option, would pay $1000 over $2000. Plus, I figure, this should be the last I hear of this issue (hopefully) for the lifetime of the car...barring, I don't know, a tree branch being thrown at the top or me being chased by a lunatic with a machete.
I guess I should feel fortunate as well that the dealership agreed to extend me the goodwill reimbursement -- auto makers are all in a bad way presently, Honda included.
Best of luck to anyone else out of warranty who has to get this resolved!
