I agree, you don't have to. However, there are so many "grinding" issues from overworked synchros on this site that some people, under certain circumstances would clearly benefit from helping the transmission do it's job with a little double-clutching on downshifts and a little patience on upshifts.

As for the crap that is "Fast and the Furious", the person that wrote that line probably has no idea what they are talking about as double-clutching serves little purpose in a sequential progression up thru the gears in a 1/4 mile race. It is most beneficial during downshifting. Although, again, I agree, you don't have to do it.
