Jersey is bad with tailgaters.
I speed up and most of the time they know i get the point and they want to go faster.
Most of the time i just move over, and give them a look when they pass.
Believe i only move over went there is a lot of brake lights in front for them.
And for the single lane road tailgaters i speed up if that doesn't work i slow down.
And even more if they still stick to me.
Then speed back up and see if they still stick.

I tailgate people when they go way below the speed limit.
Going 30 at a 40 deserves some tailgating.

MANY years ago when I was in high school, I used to carry a grease gun in my car. It was the kind of grease gun that had the steel connector, not the rubber hose. When someone got too close, we would pull that grease gun out from under the seat, aim it straight up in the air, and give it a dozen or so real hard pumps.

The grease would fly up above our car, get hit by the on-rushing air, and disintegrate into a thousand tiny pieces of greasy, gunk which would land all over the front of the tailgating car. Before long we would see his wipers come on (which would only serve to smear the grease all over his windshield), and quickly thereafter... off the road he would pull to clean his windshield!

Of course, that was MANY, MANY years ago. I would NEVER advocate such behavior today!

I generally don't get too excited unless they're on their cell phone. I find they are usually pretty alert. (but when they're on their cell phone god knows where they're at)

Try driving a truck intown for a living. People tailgate me all day long. What's even worse (in any car, for that matter) is when someone HAS to pull out in front of you, just to go BELOW the speed limit. I would say that 70%-80% of the time there isn't a car behind me for at least a block, but they couldn't wait the 5-10 seconds for me to pass.

I see that all the time. It amazes me. I'm beginning to wonder if people just can see.

The woman behind me this morning was really frightening. She was holding her cell with one hand, and talking with the other. I have no idea how she was steering. All the while, she was so close behind me that I couldn't see her front license plate in my mirror.

Tailgaters don't follow the road, they follow your bumper. Look ahead for something close to traffic on the side of the road, say a parked car, electrical box, etc. and slowly drift toward it until you are heading straight on. timing is everything. unless they are in some big SUV and can see completely over your car they will be following you. At the last possible instant swerve back onto the road and let the idiot clean out the obstacle. make sure you can get clear of the carnage somehow - you have to have a way out.

as for them, f*k 'em. I could care less about someone that tailgates me in traffic.

i'm almost disappointed now when people stop tailgating me, because i'm trying to set my plan in motion and they've gone and spoiled everything.
