There's a lot of talk about taking apart the housings... I have a hint for better re-assembly:

Using small C-clamps or small Quick-Grips, I clamp a small section of housing together and heat the perimeter (as if I was pulling them apart). When the black adhesive gets soft, crank the clamps a bit until the clear is fluch with the black plastic... let it cool and harden. Go to the next section... etc.

The problem with one of my first reassemblies was the space between the clear and black plastic. I then had to use a good amount of silicone to seal the space. The problem with silicone is it is good for water sealing but not a strong adhesive. You really need to ude as much of the black thermoplastic adhesive as you can to hold the housing together and then seal with silicone.

A different note: the rear light housings are increadibly difficult to take apart. I cracked the housing on my forst attempt because the clear plastic is a lot thinner than the clear on the front housings (because they don't have to be resist flying rocks). I will get back to you on proper disassembly...

I knew you were going to ask that... To paint the black plastic body color. Dewain27 painted his front headlight inserts body color which looked fantastic. So, I disassembled two of my extra front housings to do the same and it looks fantastic. He and I are doing the same for the rear... I'm sure it will look awesome as well if I can open the rears without breaking them.
