I'm very protective of my S and I work with several people who are also car crazy. In 2002 when my car was brand new this is what happened at a work function. When I got there I drove around and found a remote place to park, all alone, completely out of the way. Well, you can imagine my surprise when I looked out at my car later and saw this. Arn't friends great...
They did this just to have some fun. I will admit, we all had a good laugh...
I don't subscribe to the idea of parking next to cap spots, as I have seen folks trying to get in and out of their cap vehicles and there can be issues with weight, balance, and gear (crutches, wheelchairs, wide swinging doors, etc.) with cap folks.
I park in the out back. Next to a light or curb. I park very near the stationary object, thus leaving a couple of extra feet between my car and the line that divides my spot from my neighbor.
There is nothing wrong at all with wanting to protect your car from dings.
The WRONG here, is infringing on others. You can easily accommodate your own needs without infringing.
You can also easily step on the backs of others to accommodate your own needs.
It is your choice to comply with the rules we all follow, or not.
If you elect not to comply, and thus invent your own set of rules that apply only to yourself, please do not be surprised or offended when someone else decides to alter the rules (following your groundbreaking example) that protect you from vandalism.
I don't care who they are or how nice or expensive their ride is, NOBODY deserves to take up 2 parking spots. There is no reason why anyone should think that just because they care about their car or have a lot of money that the implied rules of society suddenly don't apply to them. Some people think they're more special, but they're not.
I have an even bigger pet peeve about door dings. It really says something about society when someone carelessly damages someone else's property, yet because nobody saw it and they're not likely to get caught, suddenly they don't need to own up to it.
Small accidents happen sometimes... all you gotta do is 'fess up, but most people don't. Ticks me off to no end.
That being said, I usually park away, but not all the way back. 1 spot only.
hey guys. i really didn't think this was gonna be such a hot topic. but after reading all your posts..i'm going to change my ways. haha.
to clarify, i wasn't parking like that to be a d*ck or b/c i thought i was better than anyone or that my car was better than anyone else's. although i can see where people can see that being the case, i was just doing it to protect my car b/c i hate dings. and i've never done it in a parking garage either, it has always been in the back of uncrowded/not going to get crowded lots.
but from now on..it's one space, but still in the 'cool guy row' in the back. haha.
also i'm going to be trying this new 'curve parking'..i hear its all the rage now. haha.
and can we all agree that parking spaces are becoming wayyy too small now? i know the S is a small car, but in general i like more space, not less. haha.
I have never taken up 2 spots in my life and I will never take up 2 spots.. I hate seeing that however I do park out in the back of the parking lot. Nothing ridiculous, usually 4 or 5 spots from the next car. So far I have had good luck with that. You still have the people that come and park right next to you which agitates me a bit but if you really think about it and what i've come across in my line of work there are a lot of clueless people out there who wouldn't understand why you parked out away from other people, and hell maybe the reason they parked next to it was to look at it some more because they liked it. I agree though there are a lot of disrespectful people out there and I hate door dings...
I always park my S out as far away as possible, and whenever I can, right next to the curb to minimize the chances of someone parking next to me.
Well, here at the University, the parking lots fill up quick. I had a nice spot in the back which was the last spot. Now the people painting the lines weren't math majors, as there was a little bit of wasted space at the end between the last spot and the curb. It might be big enough to fit a motorcycle in, maybe a golf cart. It isn't even square, it rounds to the curb.
