Default Threw a Rod- Anyone else?

Howdy Folks

I own a 2001 S2K, 15K miles, regular oil changes, 10w/30, approx every 4K miles.

Last Saturday, while beating up on sport bikes at the local mountain (Palomar Mt for you San Diego guys) I threw a rod at aprox 8000 rpm.

Put a hole in the oil pan, sounded like someone was beating the inside of the engine block with a chain.

To the little car's credit, it got me the 5 miles to civilization, where I got a tow to the dealer. I am now battling with them re: warranty.

Anyone else hear of this, or is it a problem? Any input would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Good stuff, thank you!

Interesting about the ECU recording 7 days of data. Luckily I don't have anything to be worried about there, IMHO.

I wouldn't call a downshift to second from 35MPH and accelerating to near redline a mis-shift- would Honda? Or you? That was the last moment before the engine failure.

I'm *really* worried Honda is not going to honor the warranty. Just kinda getting that feeling at the moment. More precedents or input would be most appreciated.

Hey JohnnyCat,

Sorry to hear about your incident, and yes, that post was mine.

Well, I think I am in the right because Honda must prove that there was ABUSE - and since there wasn't (the evidence SAYS so, as well as the hundreds/thousands of people that actually WITNESSED my actions and the 50 people around me that witnessed the actual catastrophe over the weekend).

If Honda Canada DARES to rip me off, I will sue.

I have too many witnesses, too much evidence to prove it was some type of failure due to defect as opposed to abuse.

Keep me in the loop, drop me an email too if you like - I will do the same.

Peace.

Might want to get a good book on OBD-II. Someone is clearly blowing smoke your your ass! The S2000 doesn't load max speed, max RPM or redline aquisition data. The statement it saves a week's worth of data is absolutely false!!!

P.S. Your thread gives Honda every right to revoke any warranty claim you might have had.....should have deleted it! Now that Chris linked it to this thread you'll have to get Johnny Cat to delete this thread too. Honda is alive and well on this board...from AHM to the engineers in Tochigi, trust me I know .

I'm not sure I'd mention the fact you continued driving after you had a hole in you oil pan.

I don't think the oil pan sprung a leak until the last 100 feet- at least that's what the oil trail suggests.

There was no way I was going to leave the car where it was- it was pretty much way out in the boondocks- probably a bad judgement in hindsight, but at the time, things were tough enough without being stranded in the middle of no-where. If I had a cell phone, I probably would have stopped immediatly.

I'm not too worried about Honda reading the post, I believe I am fully justified in expecting Honda to honor the warranty. The engine failed, was already burnt toast, IMHO, and under the circumstances, I tried to make the best of a bad situation, at least for me, as the car was already finished.

Anyway, I really appreciate the input folks, I wish I was here under more happy circumstances, and I suspect that one day I will.

In the meantime, I may post some "kill" stories.

Utah S2K, I am interested in knowing why the post voids warranty!

Any input from Honda employees would be great too.
