I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "paying for the S2000's VTEC cross over point?"
I can tell you that the stock exhaust is pretty quiet in normal driving. Quieter than I expected it to be when I bought mine. Having said that, if you've got your foot in it when you hit VTEC, which should be at or near 6000 rpms, you'll know it, not only in the sound of the engine but also in the feel of the car. It's relatively dramatic if you're not used to it. I can't say how it'll compare to your Prelude but it's loads of fun.
Congrats on the up coming purchase. Let us know how it works out.

Performance wise: I have a modified 5th gen prelude and despite all the modifications, it does not compare to the S2000. It definately outhandles it, more power, and more fun to drive. The prelude is good for more torque but it's not that much difference to begin with, so I don't feel much difference. After you hit vtec in the S2000 that difference is completely gone.
Noise wise, stock for stock they're both quiet. You will need to upgrade the S2000 if you're looking for a louder growl. I opted for a JIC dual exhaust catback because the Prelude only has single exhaust (and I fancy dual), however, single is the way to go for weight savings and overall greater hp gain.
Price wise the S2000 mods are all more expensive than the Prelude. You are going to realize you took the Prelude for granted. Oh and FYI the rear tires only lasted me 8k under normal driving conditions, so taking that example you're looking at much more maintenance costs, including the rag top. It's all worth it though. I wouldn't trade the S2000 for anything in it's price range.

I had a BB6 Prelude, 2000 Type SH...There's no comparison. In the middle, I had an RSX Type S, and that blew away the Prelude as well. The new Honda 4 cylinders are just amazing. The B and H series were nice, but the K and F-C series...woooooo

The stock S02's are a soft compound tire and as such, won't last long especially when compared to a standard automobile tire. Most folks around here seemed to get between 10k and 15k miles out of the standard S02 tires. I few, like Prelupino, get a little less than that. There are other tires on the market that work well for the S2000 that will net you better mileage than the S02's. You'll sacrifice a litte grip with them but that may not make any difference for you, depending on how you want to drive the car.
I'm not intending to contradict Prelupino. Just letting you know that there are alternatives. The 8k he quotes as a life limit for the rear S02's is not uncommon around here but from what I've read through the years, it's not that hard to do better than that too.
FWIW! Let us know when you get the car!

PS: Just an FYI thing here. The stock S02 tires on the early S2000's are first class tires if it's dry and warm outside. They are really lousy tires when the temps drop below about 40 or so. They are also NOT very good in wet weather. A combination of the two will make things "really" touchy. There are too many people around here who've found out about that after winding up in a ditch or wrapped around some phone pole.
I'm not trying to scare you off of the S02's. Most folks operate the car in all conditions with these tires and with no adverse problems but you need to understand their limitations and adjust your driving habits accordingly.
Punctuation problem?
