tough decision
Unless beating other people is what you're most concerned about, the watch is probably the smarter choice. As you said it doesn't really depreciate much provided that you do keep it looking new and at some point you will have to sell or trash what you got. Personally, I'm not a fan of Cartier watches as they look too... artsy? for me. In that price range I'd prefer a breitling (although they are quite big) crosswinds or something.
I understand what people say about buying a nice watch is a waste and in truth buying any kind of luxury item is a waste. The same can be said about buying a turbo, the S2000 is faster than 90% of the cars on the road and you can't even drive the car past 60% on public roads anyway (legally). Furthermore, i doubt most of us races professionally so getting a faster car is strictly for bragging rights, and in this day and age speed=money (what do you think the proportion is of people who custom fabricate a turbo manifold or went to the junk yard for upgrades to the people who just looked at a catalog and clicked order?).
A watch tells time, a car transports, anything outside the realm is the same.

I was reading Robb Report the other day and they explained that wrist "watches" are pretty passe, who really needs one? There are clocks everywhere, cell phone, car, GPS, etc....However watch makers like to show how well they can make a watch, how they're art is advancing, how they're timepieces compare to other high end time pieces (we're only talking abouy high-end watches), that's what keeps them making the watches. So anymore a watch is not useful, it's a status symbol, plane and simple, if anyone tells you different hand them a $100 Citezen that keeps perfect time and that'll be the end of it. Basically your displaying art on your wrsist so that other people will know you have $$ and taste, though I know a lot of people with real $$ who would never buy a Cartier.
Getting a nice watch isn't all about presenting some overly-money-ed image; you get a nice watch for nice occasions; but I guess if you're the type that wears blue-jeans to a wedding, then wear a sport watch.
I have three primary watches that I use -- and yes, one is a fossil. I find its perfect for highly casual events. Then I have a mid-level casual watch, and then a Baum&Mercier for nicer occasions.
Anyway, on this point, I think it is a little out of the bounds to say: "You just bought an expensive watch, so sell your S and get at least a porche, or a Ferrari."
Most people who care about fashion (and not cars), would not know the S is a $34k car; mine has been called everything from a porsche to a corvette over my many years of ownership. Besides, frankl, who cares? If he likes his watch, stop harrasing him.

Sorry but I cant get over you watch guys...
IT TELLS THE TIME. NOTHING MORE.
And no one else cares about what kind of watch you have on your wrist, other than the fact that you wasted so much money on it. So you're not impressing anyone.

I don't think this thread was created to try and impress anyone. Lets face it just about everyone here had to have done something halfway right to be able to drop this kind of money on this kind of car much less dropping another 5-6 grand into a SC or turbo setup. So, at the end of the day if you can sleep at night with the decision that you made then dammit you made the right decision
For me it's 6 thousand well spent.
Let me first say this: if you have to pick between spending $5k on a watch and $5k on your car, then you can't afford either. Both are completely unnecessary luxury items. Spending money you can't afford is your first mistake.
Your second mistake was picking the watch.
Turbo/SC is definately a money pit, but if it satisfies your jones for speed and keeps you from dropping 60k on a Z06, then it could be construed as money well spent. Once the 237hp no longer excites me, I'll have to consider going to FI or trading up.
A watch is a total waste. About as useful and stylish as a diamond pinky ring. Anyone who might be impressed by a watch certainly wouldn't be impressed by a Cartier. And to those of use that think man-jewlery is effete you'll look, well, effete.
Take the watch back and find something, anything, better to do with your money.
<edit> The fundamental difference is that spending the money on the car is for you, spending the money on the watch is just to impress others.</edit>

99% of everyone that I come in contact with DON'T notice the watch, how many people have you encountered that ask questions or stare at your car?
And apparently some of you guys arn't into time pieces and don't know that much about nice ones because Cartier makes very very very nice time pieces.
My queastion is why did the OP even make this post unless he wanted people to know he dropped $5k on a watch??
Soooo why did he want us to know he bought a new Cartier?? We can't even see it. He posted it to let us know that he has "taste" and a disposable income and really has no other place to spend the $$ than to buy and brag on a ballin' watch.
How many of us care?? Why is this thread even still going on an S2k site??
I'm no youngster and obviously don't slum with ballers but I can appreciate $$, heck $5k would get me a newer dirt bike, to me that would be $$ well spent or maybe getting the kid a new bike. I make 6 figures but can't justify spending $$ on jewelry for me (other than what the wife wants me to wear), my wife's got some nice stones. I've got a couple earings in each ear but they're the same ones I've been wearing for almost 10 yrs.
I have to agree with an earlier poster, the younger folks out there have a different idea of $$ well spent, image is what you are not what you show off. To each his own, I'm just not that frivoluos so don't really understands the facination with blingy stuff.
My Sk2 rocks a turbo, baller wheels, ASM body parts, carbon fiber body parts, yada yada yada. Much more than the watch would cost but somehow I can justify all that and get intense grinage from it, a watch would sit in a drawer most of the year, I don't even wear the ones I have.

I dont know. I guess the views of everyone is just different because regardless of anything unless your filthy rich, I just cant spend 5k on a watch.
I'm not here to tell you that you should have bought the turbo/sc and not the watch, but maybe used it on something else. As everyone stated, it just tells you the time and maybe the date. You can get very nice watches for a fraction of that price being a different brand of course. And you can wear it alot more times with no worries.
I guess for myself, spending 5k on something means it better be something I use....ALOT. Not just on occasions. I can see why alot are saying you should've bought the turbo/sc because it would be something "you" would use alot and enjoy more. Instead of a watch worn once in awhile. I sure wouldn't were a 5k watch on a regular basis or every weekend.
IMO, since you started this thread, I feel there is still some doubt about what you did. I think you might've enjoyed it more if you just spent it on other things than one main thing. Or better yet, just saved the money up. I'm pretty sure your wife would have preferred that. And then just make a decision when your sure what you want to spend it on. Return the watch and see how it makes you feel. Relieved? Stressed out? You still want it?
Just my .02....
