<edit> The fundamental difference is that spending the money on the car is for you, spending the money on the watch is just to impress others.</edit>

My queastion is why did the OP even make this post unless he wanted people to know he dropped $5k on a watch??
Soooo why did he want us to know he bought a new Cartier?? We can't even see it. He posted it to let us know that he has "taste" and a disposable income and really has no other place to spend the $$ than to buy and brag on a ballin' watch.

What a waste of time. But, I have nothing better to do with mine so here we go...
Obviously, he doesn't have disposable income because he had to pick one over the other instead of buying both, now he has to "save up" for the other stuff. That's not disposable that's discretionary.
Yes, Cartier makes nice watches but I think you would have made a better impression with a lex, some N&L Windsor Strap and a couple Henry Poole's. If you really want to show style and class, go for some John Lobb's. *yummy*
A Cartier on the wrist of a married guy with his nuts on the shelf wearing billabongs just doesn't say much to those around them.

I dunno why people think buyng a nice watch is strictly for showing off. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of worldy people out there who buy these kind of things to show off, but there are others who actually appreciate these pieces for what they are. Same could be said about buying a Porsche or Ferrari.
See, things like fashion and such I believe is strictly for showing off (or rather fitting in), although there are also exceptions. But things liek watches and cars can be like art; people simply appreciate these products.

I think you would have got more enjoyment out of the FI. The watch just sits there and I doubt you're going to use it to tell time either. I think watches are totally played out. But it's your thing so whatever makes you feel good. That much money for a watch sounds preposterous to me.

or
hmmm hard question
Might as well put up a pic of the watch you bought
