Default Towing Question

what's up guys.
I'm planning on trailering my S to the dragons this weekend, and was wondering if anyone have had an experience trailering with a half-ton Truck.
I'll be renting the flatbed trailer from u-haul which weighs about 2,000 lbs.
The truck will be either a 1/2 ton silverado or a Ram w/ no towing package.
Looking at the spec from the manufacturers, they state that they're capable of towing up to 5,000 lbs, but I'm afraid that I might be pushing it to the limit.
I'm responsible for any frame/bumper damage to the truck, and was wondering if it's a safe idea to tow my S with it?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks guys.

Dan

I trailered mine from NY to NC with an Exploder with no problems. And that thing only has a 4.0 V-6.

Wasn't so lucky the week after with my friend driving my beater down. Everything worked out in the end though. And we were only scared $hitle$$ and not hurt.

Thanks for the advice!
But wow, that was scary!
Glad no one was hurt.
Was that your own trailer, or was it rented?
Thanks

When I bought my S, I towed it from MI to OH (about 5 hours) on a borrowed U-Haul flat bed trailer behind a Ridgeline quite comfortably. The U-Haul trailer had a surge brake system built into it, make sure it works properly.

Of course, make sure your equipment (tow vehicle, trailer, driver!!) are all in good condition.

OMG rajun asian! I'm surprised the S didn't have the same fate as the pick up - the explorer is NOT a good towing option for that trailer and S2000.

It may be possible to tow the S with a 1/2 ton, but I wouldn't do it.

rajun asian - just looking at the attitude of your Explorer with the green pickup on the trailer makes me cringe. I'm glad that you were not hurt.

It's certainly possible, but you have to know how to trailer. You also have to remember that you have to make things as easy as possible on the haul vehicle. You have to use experience and technique in place of brute force.

[Crystal Ball] An Explorer was used to tow a trailer over its weight rating. Excessive tongue weight caused a light front end and overweighted rear springs. While towing, the trailer started swaying and the tow vehicle was unable to control the sway. The trailer and load flipped over.[/Crystal Ball]

Of course a 1/2 ton can get the trailer moving, but that is not the important part. The most important aspect of trailering is STOPPING!!!!!! The 1/2 ton w/o towing package may not have adequate brakes. You need to look into that. There is something called a heavy half, that is a half ton with a towing and brake package upgrade.

As for the Explorer, no surprise it was able to get the trailer moving, but look what happened when it couldnt contol it. Brakes & wheelbase are what you need to think of, the wheelbase should be fine with a full size truck.

We tow a horse trailer with a no-frills Chevy 2500 work truck. It is 11 years old and plenty of newer 150's and 1500's have much more powerful engines. But, they have nothing when it comes to the stopping power of the 2500. Also, we have a trailer brake that adds signifant stability to the load. It is probably not something you will find on a regular half ton.

Best of luck
