Tranny problem fixed, big sigh of relief...
Happy new year to you all!
Here is what's been problem to my car.
Those of you who do not know, I have ATS final gears installed in my car and have been enjoying the upgrade for nearly over 10000 miles and currently I have 30100 miles on the odometer.
Approximately few weeks ago, I have been getting extreme noise from the tranny area in all speed and about five days ago I heard the little grinding noise when car is inching ahead and it seemed the noise gets worse to the point of worrying me that car will stop any second. Well my mechanic finally had a chance to crack open the tranny to find out that it was the fault of one of the ball bearing. Before that diagnosis, him and I thought about the worst case scenario that something is seriously screwed up in the tranny box and I may have to put back my stock secondary gears, big disappointment there.
But thank God! It wasn't the case and all other parts including ATS gears are totally fine and it was that one ball bearing causing the damaging noise. What is more lucky for me was that the nearby local Honda dealer had the new part for it!
Anyway I am so happy and relieved that my car is fixed as good as new and I am back on the vtec cruising again.
Anyway, my mechanic was kidding and joke about how I should slow down and not driving the car too fast and I responded to him that he should order more of those ball bearings in stock and handy because I will be back for more of those.
Check out the pics of the faulty and banged up ballbearing, I think this goes right behind the secondary drive gear(ATS).
I don't know just what the cause was but I do admit I have been driving very hard with this car with ATS gears in place.
What a souvenir:
Can you see the damaged surfaces?
Ok this is better close-up
Well, more about this later.
I gotta go and drive.

Hmmm...
That's not a ball bearing, its a tapered roller bearing. (Trust me, I work for a bearing manufacturer, SKF).
I would worry about the missing metal flakes from the damaged bearing. They tend to float through lubricating liquid to other bearings.
Even if microscopic, with time these particles will cause increasing damage to the point where you can see it, and hear it.
You may have other bearings in your tranny now, with microscopic damage to them. These will fail with time.
