Trouble attaching the gas cap to the holder
I'd leave it on if you live in a state that won't let you pump your own, otherwise, cut that sucker and use the door hanger. You don't need it, I'll never lose my cap, because it's either screwed on, or on the door hanger at all times.
I have an '06 and I have never had any sort of problem with the tethered gas cap as is.
Not even sure if I can picture in my head what problem you're having with it being in the way.
So I went out to the garage with a camera and took pics of my gas cap both in the normal position and in the door hanger.
And whaddya know. Nope, still can't figure out how you're having problems with it being in the way.
Are you twisting it somehow? The wire is attached to the gas cap by a plastic ring. The gas cap should spin easily inside that ring. Once you unscrew the gas cap, you shouldn't have to flip it over or around or anything, just move it over and set the threaded side of the cap in the holder, pump your gas, move the cap back, screw it in, and go.
The plastic wire shouldn't stick up, stick out, or twist at all. If yours is already twisted up, that's probably the source of the whole problem.
You could possibly remove the nut that it's attached to and move it to the nut on the upper left side of the filler tube. Maybe that'll get it out of the way without having to cut anything.
That plastic tether and ring, on my car, has some sort of plastic knob or ball on a short projection from one side of it. I still, for the life of me, can NOT figure out what that part's for.
