Default Underhood heat sheild...is it needed?

OK weird questions but a while back my oil cap worked itself out and fell off and it took me a day or so to realize it. During this day or so all kinds of oil splashed up onto that cardboard shield that is on the underside of the hood and it looks horrible. Is there anyway to get the oil off so it looks normal again? If not can I take this heatshield off without hurting anything? Thanks.

Don't know for sure but I remember reading some time ago that several owners had S2k's delivered without them.

I've been told that the reason is that during an engine fire that piece is designed to "melt" easily and it blankets the engine, possibly putting the fire out, or protecting other areas of the engine.

That is one of the purposes for it. In case of a fire it is made of some material that helps to distinguish the fire. The problem is with oil all over it, it may just add to the fire. Not sure what to do in this case.

If it is for extinguishing a fire then it's kind of pointless now with all that oil on it... yes?

since you are going to take it off, why dont you try to clean it with some cleaners? orange clean thing(forgot the name), steam, or just soap and water? i dont known if it can withstand those agents, but why not give it a try. if all fails, it shouldn't cost that much to replace. let us know.

$49.62 at HParts. Might need some plastic plugs (clips) as well.
