USAToday HID article
Here's an article in USAToday about people complaining about HID headlights. The best part:
"Another Society of Automotive Engineers paper tackles headlight glare and its side issues, warning that 'agitation over the effect of glare caused by powerful headlamps has gradually increased until we are threatened with drastic legislation.'
That one's by engineer Alden L. McMurtry

The problem is not HIDs per se. The problem is that our cars have a relatively firm suspension and when we hit even small bumps on the road it sends our beams rocketing skywards.
In combination with the fact that that our HID beams are much brighter than halogens this is a real nuisance to other drivers.

I'd much rather have an HID car behind me than some SUV. I swear it's must be in the owners handbook never to turn off the fog lights either. I had a woman behind me the other night with her fogs and brights on. She followed me for about 5 miles and I couldn't get away from here due to traffic. I finally had to pull some crazy pull-off, back on to get behind her and flash her. By that point though, my head was killing me and my eyes hurt for about an hour.

Complaints about HIDs?
They might look brighter, but how are they dangerous?
SUVs are a lot more dangerous by being on the road.
If they can take all the SUVs off the highways, then I would have no complaint about the complaints on HID.

Despite trying to irritate other drivers with my HIDs, I have not succeeded. I have never had another driver "flash" me to complain about my lights at night.
IMHO the the cause of the bad press is people putting illegal blue bulbs in their headlights or using illegal 100-watt bulbs in place of their stock 55-watt ones
