the vafc v1 works fine on an s2000.
you don't "need" one if you are running a stock vortech unit, a little bit of FPR tuning should be fine right out of the box. you can take the unit off, and no, they are not unreliable (atleast in my case)

i tried to unhook the vafc and the car ran like crap, i hooked it back up and the car wont start... wtf
(reason why i bought a harness)
it blow the alternater fuse... don't know how it did that but anyway...
when i disconected the vafc i took out the wires for the map and the vetec and attached them back togther, like factory, and took the main clip out of the vafc. left the battery negative off the car for i while, hooked battery back up and took it for a test drive, and it bouged at anything over 1/4 throttle.
after figuring out it was a fuse i hooked the vafc back up and im back to square one... i really dont want it on the car but i guess if i have to have it i'll try to take it to a dyno and see if it'll run right for now.
if i would take it off again, there isn't any tuning you can do with the vortech setup is there?
