I like the Modifry mount but not the wimpy panavice head that comes with it.

I have a small Sony DV camera that I like. It has one major flaw for this application in that it has a bottom loading cassette door. If I was starting from scratch I would get a top loader so you don't have to take it off the mount to change the tapes...

I have also used a small still digital camera in video mode. A much smaller package than a DV camera. Most can shoot video that is not too bad, depending on what you need.

I also have a bullet cam that uses the inputs on my Sony DV for recoding.

Manfrotto head, more stable than panavice.
Wingnut keeps it from rattling with no camera.

Also consider a low profile mount with quick detach.

I made my own mount. It bolts onto the holes for the windscreen. You have to take the windscreen out...but it's not a big deal.

I got all the stuff from a hardware store for $20ish. My friend says it's better than his manufactured one (for his 350Z).

The track footage was awesome. I can post the vids if you'd like. I was using some crappy $100 Aiptech camera. It actually worked very well. I'm kind of a minimalist sometimes. My stuff always works great, though.

it's easy. It looks good, too. I guess taking out the windscreen may be a little inconvenient....but whatever.

It's an aluminum channel with some nylon spacer bushings. I used rubber fender washers to dampen vibrations. The mounting head can be found on a cheapo tripod.

Mounting head by itself: $19.99 plus shipping.
Cheapo tripod with mounting head: $14.99 at circuit city.

The score
Me: 1
The man: 50....but I'm catching up.

here are some pics and vids. I keep whoring the vids because I think they're rad.

I think the quality of the videos was very good. Again, it was a $100 camera. I see this quality of footage from lots of you tube in car videos. I didn't want to spend $400 on a "real" camcorder. This one works great.

Total with the camera mount was $125. I saved enough money to stay at a swanky hotel for the track days and make the GF happy. They had a safari and a water park inside the hotel. Everyone got to see my in my 2 peice bikini whether they liked it or not.

a tip: put some tape around the microphone part of the camera. It GREATLY reduces wind noise. You can actually hear everything else and the wind noise goes away. That's B serious engineering right there...although I'm sure other people have done that.

I added an external mic, and ran the wire down to the center console, out of the way of the wind. It picked up the engine really well.
