Default Weak Stereo

What have you guys done about the weak powered stereo? I know the HU can be replaced for an aftermarket one but doesn't that mean the controls on the left will not work anymore? Would adding an amp to the stock setup work? If so how many amps?

Check out the electronics forum There are TONS of ideas.

Opinions vary on this, however to answer your questions:

1. You CAN retain your dash controls in one of a couple of different ways.

2. You can add an amp or two or three to the factory HU.

You can check out the link in my signature to see what I did, but there are an infinate number of ideas out there.

You could swap it out for a 2002 radio which has more power.

There are two members here. Lucid and DJ Qube. Each has a solution to retain the dash controls.

Lucid's solution is an interface box. It is either direct wire, or IR converter depending on what HU you choose. Depending on the model, it can even add some functionality like speed sensitive volume. http://www.lucidautomotive.com

DJ Qube's solution is VERY sweet, but is a little more pricy. Basically he takes your factory remote and turns it into the IR transmitter wired to the dash controls. He also replaces the ridiculasly large audio button with a 4-way joystick for navigation of CDs and MP3s. You end up loosing the IR remote that comes with your HU. I found that some HUs (like the sony I have) REQUIRE the remote for some functions so I could not go this route with my HU.

I replaced my head unit with an Alpine one and installed the Alpince KCE-865B dash controls adaptor. This meant that I could plug the Alpine loom directly into the adaptor and the adaptor directly into the OEM Honda loom - therefore making for an easy 5 minute install. This particular Alpine adaptor is not available in all markets - in my case I had to source it from the UK.

In addition to that I upgraded the front speakers to 6.5" Focal Utopias and added a Precision Power (PPI) amp giving them each about 100w RMS.

Sounds nice now and I have no problems hearing it at freeway/highway speeds with the roof down.
