I has a similar sound I was chasing. Turned out to be the diff. Sounded like it was coming from pass side, but was actually center in diff. Also had a pretty good vibration at freeway speed.

And you know its not the axle nut because?

What if axle nut is torqued properly now, but for a long time car was driven with axle nut at original factory setting, which has proven to be insufficient, and the damage was done. Now that its torqued properly, it doesn't magically heal anything. It also doesn't magically eliminate any future wear. It still wears even when properly torqued, just not nearly as fast as if its not.

Maybe it still wasn't making noise when axle nut was torqued to updated spec. But now, some miles, and some wear later, it is.

Sounds like a failing wheel bearing. Happened on both my S and my wife's S.

wheel bearing on mine failed, I don't remember a clicking noise but when I turned left or right it would load up the wheel with the bearing problem and make a lot more noise. Ignored it for awhile eventually got worse to the point where it was making noise always.
