I am going to get the owner manual to verify the recomendation for up-shift to maximize fuel consumption.
I think Honda recommented shift points as follow:
1st - 2nd: 15mph
2nd - 3rd: 25mph
3rd - 4th: 35mph
4th - 5th: 45mph
5th - 6th: 55mph

Im not sayin the car wont do it, you could probably go even slower than that in 6 on a level road but its not good for fuel economy. If you press the gas and the engine sounds bogged down then you need to downshift. Go out and do 42 in 6th gear then try to accelerate normaly and it will be doggy. An engine with a 9k rpm range is designed for cruising at a little more than 2k rpms.

Oh, I don't know, a steady pace on a level road would probably yield pretty good fuel economy.

I guess that depends on what you consider "normal." At 42 mph in 6th, I wouldn't expect much out of the engine and would be easeing into the throttle "very" gently. Under these circumstances, that's what I'd call normal and asking more of the engine without a downshift wouldn't be good for it. For clarification, I'm talking "level" roads here. I do agree though that the 2.0 and even the 2.2 were designed to cruise at just a bit over 2k rpms!

From what little I've driven an S2000 (MY02 model), I can't imagine ever being in 6th gear at that slow a speed but, you never know!

Drive Safe,
Steve R.

Mine came with a Torqueflite 3 Speed Automatic Transmission. I think the tach is a bit superfluous, but I haven't painted over it yet.

I think the MY'04s come with a four speed Torqueflite.

I have a 40mph, three-mile stretch I drive daily in fifth. Acceleration is good. Road switches to 50mph for another three miles and I do this in sixth. This is just the cruising gear selections that work for me.

I don

Dunno, when I am only cruising at 40 MPH I must be in my automatic truck.

J/K

When crusing I try to keep the RPMs under 4k or so. It would probably be 4th gear.

I do a lot of 40-45mph driving in 6th gear and average a consistent 25-28mpg so far. The engine's turning a little over 2000rpm. The engine doesn't feel like bogging although it doesn't really have any power. If I need to accelerate I drop to 5th.

I rarely downshift when slowing, too, I usually get out of gear and brake. (My downshifting technique isn't the greatest.) The only exception is when I'm slowing down on a curve - if the road is curvy I prefer to have the motor running in case I need to countersteer and apply some throttle.

I cannot believe ANYONE, let alone 18 anyones, bothered to post to this thread!

It makes me want to think of a whole family of equally stupid questions:

How hard do you pull when you open the door?
How many bars show on the gasoline gauge when you add gasoline?
When you wash your S2000, how closely do you monitor the wash water's temperature.

Oh my gosh. There are a zillion stupid things to ask.

Drive the car as it was meant to be driven and enjoy it. If you're not sure what rpm is best, EXPERIMENT FOR YOURSELF!!!!!!!!

I had trouble finding "crusing" in the dictionary, but I did find "cruse." I imagine you are talking about making pots as in potting or crusing.

Am I wrong, or am I cruising for a bruising?

cruse

cruse (kr?z, kr?s) noun
A small earthenware container, such as a pot or jar, for holding liquids.

[Middle English crouse, perhaps from Middle Dutch cruyse, pot.]
