About coming to a stop, downshifting correctly will save u unlike wearing parts faster like u think. Also faster stops
for the Schumackers in our hearts.
I'm usually in 4th gear at 40 MPH...sometimes 5th, but rarely.
Regarding being in 6th gear at 42 MPH, I'm occasionally around there when traffic slows down on the freeway and I'm too lazy to downshift. The car isn't very powerful at that speed and RPM, but it doesn't bog, either.

I checked the 2002 owner's guide last night, and the following are the recommended shift points during acceleration to maximize fuel economy.
1->2 15mph
2->3 25mph
3->4 40mph
4->5 47mph
5->6 52mph
So, my earlier statement about the ideal shift to 6th @ 42mph was a mental typo.
