I hope you're joking, otherwise we'll go start our own thread in off-topic!

I wonder what he would have to say about this thread.

Having been a moderator of a large forum, I can assure you, it's easy enough to walk away from a forum - regardless of how much you put into that forum. Especially when you feel underappreciated.

As for the current S2KI...

I'm new here, I just bought an S, and when I ask a question that's been asked a thousand times before it's not because I'm trying to redrudge it. Rather, it's b/c I'm experiencing the same exact things you old timers experienced when you first started driving your first S. I think the thing that sets us apart from so many other communities is our enthusiasm and pure passion for the car and what it represents.

The S doesn't need to change. It's continually touched up here and there. But, really, what is the car about? Does it still deliver that, mile after mile, MY after MY? That's what makes the S so special - the pure essence and thrill of being connected to the car and road. - I'd guess that it's akin to the way fighter pilots feel about their jet - they strap themselves into it and become one with it. That's something that no amount of horsepower, or torque, or whatever is going to be able to reproduce. So sure, all the competition might increase their power, or touch up the design - but, they're doing it to cover something that anyone who's driven an S can tell you - those cars don't connect you to the road the same way ours does.

That's why we love it, that's why we have this forum.

Maybe if some of the older members could remember that, chuckle a bit, and then help out the guys who are experiencing it all for the first time instead of rolling your eyes and posting links to threads that are 4 years old, this forum would be a little nicer place. (Isn't that what XViper was really all about?)

Dave wasn't all that interested in making this forum a nicer place, actually. More useful, yes. Nicer, no.

IMO, usefulness and niceness tend to be opposing forces in forums like this. When you try to mollycoddle everyone and protect their feelings, you waste a learning opportunity. Very often people need the clue-by-four more than they need the comforting self-esteem boost.

I know Dave, a.k.a. xviper well enough to go out for a bite to eat when he is in my town or I in his which is on a yearly basis. He was also kind enough to help me, and work on my car from when I bought my car new in 2002. We've met up twice this year.

I will simplify...

Heated exchange between xviper and another member in which I could see both having valid arguments. Xviper got bashed pretty hard by quite a few people. Then there is a bit of a rally with a few members on who is this xviper guy anyways.

- Xviper was the author of TONS of how to threads that you will still find today.
- Xviper helped TONS of members and never rejected anyone unless they were a complete jerk.
- This site grew because of xvipers HUGE contribution that was FREE.
- Membership grew because this site was helpful and had quality content.

IMHO, THE FINAL STRAW...
Cthree the owner of this site tells xviper to stop crying like a baby instead of backing him up, or at the least try to tactfully bring calm. That's a real nice way to treat your number one contributer and supporter. Wouldn't this engourage more crap and discourage someone with some positive passion?

It's easy for me to see why this site is is decaying. One man can make a difference.

He's not coming back!

the facts, not. Big picture thinking will always prevail over the now.
Good summary. The straw that broke his back was the cartoon nickel monger whining about his bitmap. That one guy drove a cornerstone of the site away...it still amazes me.

The lack of leadership support in attempting to corral the influx of idiocy and thus the spoiling of the forum was the foundation that crumbled, which in turn allowed the straw to inflict its damage.

I miss SteveC as well.

Steve did not give his heart and soul to the board like X. Not the same type of guy or contributor at all. Not even close. Not the same animal.

X was motivated by a love and spirt of the S.

SteveC was motivated by cold hard numbers.

SteveC just called it like he saw it. When folks made exaggerated claims, Steve would challenge them on it. I personally loved reading his threads. I did learn from them, and I think it was great to have someone out there with knowledge and the desire for accuracy. He was the BS safety valve on a water heater of sometimes dubious quality.

SteveC's departure was different. I believe his account was administratively killed after someone complained that he challenged their 1/4 mile or some such.

Do you seriously believe a "challenge their 1/4 mile or some such" will get you banned around here?

You still do not get the xviper saga (nailing it down to a FINAL STRAW) and you clearly do not know about steve C either.

You also seriously believe that 1 (ONE) guy arguing a copyright issue was responsible! - all by his lonesome!

Ruprecht: think big, think complicated, think of life as a complex environment where lots of factors lead to things.
