What kind of security systems does your apartment or condominium have?
I live in a condominium and two of the cars that are parked in the garage(gated) got broken into last night. We reported the incidents to the police, but of course all we got is a case number
. We do have surveillance cameras but the vcr unit the cameras are hooked up to was in the elevator room and was stolen couple of months ago. And we are trying to come up with some kind of solution to this problem. This is the third time cars are being broken into in one year. Those damn thieves only messed with the cars without an alarm.
Any advice or recommendations?

My apartment complex has had several cars broken into over the summer. In one case, I even noticed some guys getting ready to break into a Blazer, and I hit the panic button on my girlfriend's alarm to scare them off. There is no security in our complex and management has no intention of adding anything, unfortunately.
But what I've learned is that you can make yourself less of a target. Don't leave anything in your car, ie. bags, clothes, face to the stereo, etc. The more stuff you have in the car's interior, the more inviting it is to a thief. Park in well lit areas whenever possible. Be aware of your surroundings and don't be afraid to report anything suspicious.
Good luck.

Get your other condo owners to chip in and hire a security guard for a few nights. Make sure the guard is in a hidden area. When the theif comes in - bust him.
Nationwide average is about $10 per hour. I am sure the theif will be back in a few days, until caught.

Garage is your best security. I live in an apartment complex gated and with surveillance cameras to capture tag#'s but what good does that do when they can just walk in to the apartment complex and drive out with your car. I agree they should have a security person walking the complex. I would chip in for that.
