It seems like that the two Boxster S I took with my S2000 must had really bad skilled drivers unless they have stick the S badge on their Boxster!

[QUOTE=Warren J. Dew,Apr 12 2005, 08:58 PM]I honestly haven't met or heard of anyone else who thinks that "roadster" and "sports car" have mutually exclusive definitions, now or at any time in the past.

Oh, and "technically, the Elise is the only sports car on the list"? Come on, you can't be serious? The idea that, in the 21st century, I should have to lean over and manually roll down the passenger-side window if I am to be considered in a "true" sports car is just silly.

Here's the post that started all the drama in the first place.
I think you missed his original post in the thread:

Interesting... their list of top 5 sports cars is made up of 2 GT's, 2 roadsters, and only 1 real sports car.
That seems to imply that he thinks the Corvette and 911 are not sports cars because they are GTs, and the S2000 and Boxster S are not sports cars because they are roadsters - in other words, that "GT", "roadster", and "sports car" are mutually exclusive.

While we're talking about side curtains and windows that roll up manually, I just recalled another aspect of the "traditional roadster" - that it have a four cylinder engine. I think insisting on these things is kind of like insisting that a fighter plane have a single propeller, though; the fact that F-18s have jet engines doesn't prevent them from being fighter planes, it just means technology has improved.

Cool

These are some great replies and a lot of them.

First of all, I personally don't think a regular Boxter comes anywhere close to our cars. I drove a friend's the other day and it lacked the F1 thrill of the S2000. I'm not sure exactly what makes the Boxter S so special but the differences must be significant from the basic version.

My only mod to date is a Comptech air cooler which provided a slightly noticable improvement in performance.

I personally think getting the over steer adjusted might be the best moderate cost improvement to improve the G force capability.

I have a VW Touareg and know that there are some owners swapping their springs with Cayenne springs. Has anyone upgraded their springs and shocks to 2004 parts or are there recommended after market parts available?

As to the Road and Track Review, I feel pretty good that the S2000 is still recognized for what it is. The current review had no price constraints. Put the S2000 in a review of under $50,000 cars like the review in 2002 and it blows away the competition.

I saw a Lotus the other day at the Barber Motorsports Park. It looked like it came from another planet. It almost looked like a kit car. Its not nearly as subtle or refined as the S2000. But, I wouldn't mind having one.

I am certain that I would rather just buy another S2000 in a different color than spend the extra $30,000 on the Boxter S .

I'd rather buy a lot on Cayman Brac than purchase the Porsche Carrera or perhaps an additional S2000 and the Lotus.

The Corvette is a nice car. I didn't like Corvettes between 1975 and 2000, but the new Vette rocks.

Overall, the S2000, whatever model year, is the finest street legal piece of equipment a driver can fit himself into, under $50,000.

Peace!

I just read some of the comments re sports car and GT. Have any of you seen the Vettes on the track lately? They are killing the Porsches. Though both are pretty exciting to watch, the Vette is the most exciting of the two. We have to face it, the S2000 couldn't compete in GT1.

I would think that Vettes and Porsche just might qualify as sports cars even though they have a few creature comforts. Remember, the S2000 has power windows and a left hand volume control.

According the Porshe's own web site for US spec cars:

Boxster:
2.7L 6 cylinder - 240hp & 199 ft/lbs torque (doesn't specify the rpms on either)
0-60 in 5.9 sec for the manual tranny (which is a couple of tenths slower than most reviews of the S2000) The automatic nets you 0-60 in 6.8 sec.

Boxster S:
3.2L 6 cylinder - 280hp & 236 ft/lbs torque (doesn't specify the rpms on either)
0-60 in 5.2 sec for manual tranny (a bit faster than the S2000 in most reviews) The automatic slows it down to 6.0 seconds even in a 0-60 sprint. Still not a match for the S2000 even with the bigger engine.

Sounds like a #1 reason to leave slush boxes off of sports cars!

FWIW!
Drive Safe,
Steve R.
