It will be my only car, but not a DD. I live and work at school, so not having transportation is fine (I sold my last car in like Feb and haven't had anything since). I certainly can spend more than 12, it's just a matter of how much I want to spend on a car. Max price range would be ~16k.

As for maintenance or major repairs, they aren't a huge concern to me. We've rebuilt a couple engines here at school, my dad has a killer garage that is only 2.5hrs away, all my friends know and work on cars...etc etc

So, if there ARE major problems (like an engine rebuild), it wouldn't be a big deal but obviously wouldn't be something I'm happy about. Money isn't a huge concern, it's not like if I buy a 12k car then I'll have no money to fix it. $3k in repairs could put a dent in my cashflow, but even that would be OK if necessary.
This all being the case, it might be a good car for you. I'd still try to find something with a few less miles (80k perhaps?), but since the car is going to be more toy than transportation, I wouldn't sweat it.

Regardless of what KBB says, I wouldn't pay more than $12k for the car. You can get a 50k mile S2000 for around $16k or NEW Mazdaspeed Miatas for ~$18k from the dealer.

Best of luck, whatever you do.

If you're willing to spend up to $16k, why not compromise and find one with ~50-60k on it for $3-5k more? You'll have a bit more peace of mind.

The car may be fine, but for 100k miles, I wouldn't pay much over 10k. Then again, a 5 yr old S with 100k mi is probably better than a 7 yr old S with 100k mi.

No more than $10k. used engines and trannys, and diffs can found for a reasonable price. or have the engine rebuilt. and drive it another 105k miles.
