Can anyone tell me what the bar code on the side of the engine means?

it's the engine code that's very similar to the vin number. i freaked out when i bought my car because the engine number was three digits off of the vin, so i thought maybe it wasn't the original engine. i found out later that it's a different number, but i guess it should be close to the vin number.... i don't remember who told me this, but hope it helps
