What's the S2000's Closest Competitor?

We need a better definition of "competitor". That could mean a thousand things to a thousand different people. Are you talking about price? Performance? Value? Looks? Competing for buyers? Handling? Power? Around a track or straight line? Street cred? Or any of a thousand combinations of those listed. Which gets higher credit?
For instance, I would never consider buying a Saturn ar Pontiac so I don't consider them a competitor to the S even though the raw HP numbers and general look of the car is the same. Likewise, I can't afford a Porsche so I wouldn't consider them one as well. The 350 is a completely different car than the S, but it is the only other car I considered when I was looking.
The whole thread is useless without parameters. Its like saying "Which is better, legs or arms?".

Oh, yea, I voted for the 350, because of price/comparative value in terms of performance and amenities. I know that I looked at the 350 and the S when I went test driving. The interior of the Z threw me off, and once I test drove the S, nothing else compared
+1 with what zeiss said.
Closest competitor would be a quality performance roadster with agility & precision more important than power & luxury.
TT, 350Z, WRX, Evo, Mustang: Not a roadster.
Boxster, Z4, SLK: A bit too much luxury.
Solstice/Sky: Just too ugly and don't look high on "quality".
So, the Miata would be the closest competitor in my mind. The next would be the Boxster S. I'd eventually have to concede that the Solstice & Sky would probably be competitors, but they just don't see as "high quality" as the S2000/Miata in my mind.

A Miata is slow compard to an S, at least the GXP and Redline can keep up. They're also among the closest roadsters in price.

...you could see a hierarchy of pure sports cars going Miata < S2000 < Boxster.
That being said, i didn't pick either, because if i had more money, i'd look at a boxster, and if i had less money, i'd look at a miata.
i picked the GM goons because that's what i test drove and cross-shopped a few days before i bought the S2000. I wanted a fast, fun, nice looking convertible. On paper and standing in front of it, the Sky Red Line looked great. However, driving it left me very unimpressed. The feel, the engine note, the turbo lag, a few quirks such as the trunk, etc.--basically all the "feel of the car" things--convinced me that the S2000 was still a much better car for my money, even if the kappa twins are arguably faster and built on a brand new platform.
[QUOTE=Saki GT,Jan 9 2008, 02:22 PM] So you say competition is based on performance and agility, then discount the Sky and Solstice because you don't like the looks?

I went with the Z4. In my mind, that's the closest competitor to the S2000, comparing size, specs, and price. The Miata comes in second after that, the Boxster in third only limited by their price, and the Kappa's are a distance fourth. I see the Kappa's more as GM's design against the new Miata, not the S2000.
In my mind, "closest competitor" means a car with the same size, features, and price. That means small-ish two seater roadster around 34 plus/minus. After that, it's just personal biases.
I don't know, I feel like the Z4, Boxster, and S2000 stylings and overall packages just set themselves apart, a bit more "upscale" from the Miata and Sky/Soltice. The Miata is the quintessential roadster though, in my mind, so it's a closer competitor in my mind than a sky. I'm not saying the S2000 is on the same level as the Europeans, though I think the handling and shifter is.
But just, when people look at a Boxster, Z4, or S2000, usually the reaction is different from the reaction any of the other cars on the list garners. Besides from the "is that the new Miata" folks

Well, if you modify one enough, Miatas can be very quick. I see what you're saying about quality - I got lost in all the qualifiers in your statement. A turbo Miata would be in the same price range as a GXP, and if Mazda offered it from the factory, I'd say it would be a close competitor. As it is, I just think they are in a different power and size arena than the S.
