So , are you comparing overall stats? Or individual areas, like handling, 0-60, breaking distance, comfort, sound system?

Was this suppose to be an open-ended question?

i know its sounds dumb but my friend owns a mildly modded 350z and we cant go to the track (1/4mile) without being asked for us to race each other. So I picked the 350z due to the fact that strangers wana see us race. And yes I do win

I know this poll concerns new '08 models, but if you were to entertain used, the depreciation rates for the Euro cars is far steeper than for the S, such that comparable mileage, if not model year, Boxsters become much closer competition as time goes on.

I think in general, competition means one of two things. The vehicle(s) buyers are most likely to cross-shop or the vehicle(s) the engineers/stylists used as bogeys during development. The latter are usually a notch up in price (ie, the new Corvette ZR1 is touting to deliver GT2 / 599 performance for a fraction of the price). That's one type of competition, but buyers will probably only cross-shop the Viper.

As I wrote before, the S2k has not seen much performance improvement nor price escalation over the past 9 years, so the target competition (Boxster/M Roadster) has moved even further upscale, with nothing competing directly with the S. With sales continuing to dwindle, perhaps it's not surprising that nobody else is targeting this demographic.

Ok..... who the hell voted "Subaru WRX Sti"?

I chose the Z mainly because everybody who sees the S seems to ask "why didn't you get a 350?". For whatever reason, the S and Z seemed linked together. Maybe because they were released close together and are both japanese? who knows. I'd also be lying if I said I didn't consider a Z when I was buying my S.

I think Miata or Kappa twins are also definite contenders now because of the how the roadster market has evolved and how the S hasn't exactly kept up.

Why didnt RX-8 come up in the debate?
Wasn't that what the S was pinned against before?

We need a better definition of "competitor". That could mean a thousand things to a thousand different people. Are you talking about price? Performance? Value? Looks? Competing for buyers? Handling? Power? Around a track or straight line? Street cred? Or any of a thousand combinations of those listed. Which gets higher credit?

For instance, I would never consider buying a Saturn ar Pontiac so I don't consider them a competitor to the S even though the raw HP numbers and general look of the car is the same. Likewise, I can't afford a Porsche so I wouldn't consider them one as well. The 350 is a completely different car than the S, but it is the only other car I considered when I was looking.

The whole thread is useless without parameters. Its like saying "Which is better, legs or arms?".
What you just listed is exactly what I wanted everyone to think about. It's an overall package, not just one exact thing.

That's why I thought that the discussion might be interesting. Being too exact doesn't leave room for arguement.

I wanted to initially include more cars including the Mazda RX-8 and Lotus Elise but I had to pick between 10 cars.

Tell the form moderators to allow us to have more choices on polls!
