See....we can all kiss and make up!!

2kturkey or Dave.....could you please tell me the actual oil type and grade that Honda recommends installing AFTER the 1000km service?

Is it any different to the oil they then put in at 5000kms?

STL, you are right - one would think that there would be no difference at all between the USA and Australia? In fact, as for example, Melbourne, doesn't get any warmer than say, Detroit, and certainly gets no where near as cold (we don't get snow in the city EVER in Melbourne), you'd think that in Melbourne, the conditions would be described as less extreme and you could go for longer without an oil change?

Have we any Japanese counterparts that can provide information on what it says in their owners manual?

Cheers,

After reading all this again, here's my 2 cents:
The GM of my trusted Honda dealer ( I know that I am lucky to have an honest one), who is an S2000 driver as well, has told me that the Honda has told them the engines come prefilled with "break-in" oil and that it is expected that some oil will burn off in the "break-in" period of 600 mile.
It is recommended the first oil change not occur within the first 3000 miles, but after that we can do as we please. The break-in oil has more surfactants than the typical oil, which helps carry particles from the engine breaking in to the filter.
Up until the S2000, I've always changed out the oil at 1000 miles when new, and then every 3000 mile increment afterwards. I still do my S2K at every 3000. I dont mind the extra oil and filters, I just want my car to last. Since I do commute in my S2k at times, the 5-6 mile trip" does apply to me thus I follow the "severe conditions" route.

Honda recommends 10w-30 (unless you are in sub zero F temp areas)

So then, what you COULD do is either:

* At 600 miles, obtain some more (new) break-in oil and replace the filter. Does Honda sell this?

OR

* At 600 miles - replace the filter with a new one, but REUSE the existing oil until 3000 miles. That may be a consolation!

Wanabe,
As I and others have said elsewhere, with regards to the issue of changing the break in oil "early", it is a tradeoff (between whatever advantage the breakin oil's addiditves provide versus the known downside of oil degradation over time). I doubt if anyone really knows the answer to this one- and I'd say don't sweat it too much- your car will be fine- you are obviously comitted to maintaining it. I'd go ahead and change it, especially since we know that our AUS s2000 owners are told to change at 600 mi. Any other time and the only downside is the hassle and expense of a change, which is pretty small, IMO.
Sime,
The question of whether HMC sells "break-in oil" has come up repeatedly, both on this board and when most of the community seemed to be on HA net, and I've never seen someone post that they know how to obtain it.

In my 89 Audi 90 Quattro, I changed the oil starting at 10,000 miles with syntheic, changing every 10,000 miles thereafter for 290,000 miles, and then I sold it =]. Its still going strong.
I had burned a quart in the first 2K in the honda so i visited the dealer and asked if they had the "break in" oil available. They made 30 phone calls and all they could tell me was...no.
SO castrol GTX did the job.
I am at 3800 miles now and I am thinking I will change it when I get to it :-)

I believe it was cdelena or cthree that told be they were changing their (synthetic) oil from one of their other cars and saving it for some farmer. He originally thougt the farmer was using it in his tractors, but later found out he was using in his volvo!! I think the oil was originally used for like 3000 miles in the first car then for another 6000 miles in the second car -- and supposedly that had been going on for a long time and the Volvo was still running fine with something like 200,000 miles on the tach! I'm sure I've butchered this story some...but I got the gist right! Maybe the original person can re-tell it correctly...
