Why more oil consumption during VTEC???
I have owned a 98 prelude in the past (sold after driving a 100,000 miles) and now have 40,000 miles on my 02 S2k, I have never been able to see any relationship between oil burning and VTEC. I drive my S all year long, in winter I don't vtec as much as in summer but still burn the same amount of oil.
It is not VTEC itself but the high rpm and possibly the cylinder/ring configuration designed for high rpm.
These engines spend more time over 6000 rpm than most and a good amount of time at 7000 - 9000 where few even spin. Any engine that did not get a perfect ring seat either through irregularities in manufacture, break-in issues, or even the dumb luck of oil or air contamination, can have higher oil consumption.
The norm seems to be moderate consumption, but there are many that are regularly driven very hard that do not consume measurable amounts of oil.
