Why is there a rev limiter cut-out?

Yes.. I've read somewhere I'm sure of someone who wrecked his engine and gearbox by taking 2nd at over 90mph. If I recall correctly Honda agreed to warranty the job as an act of good faith as the car was pretty well brand new. This was an s2000. Did I pick it up off this board??

If you over-rev and the rev limiter cuts the fuel or ignition, can that sometimes kill the engine so that you have to push the Start button again? It seems this could be dangerous to suddenly be sitting in a car with a dead engine while trying to accelerate hard into a tight spot in the interstate or something.

As I understand it you get fuel and or ignition back as soon as your revs drop within range. I suppose there could be situations where it could be dangerous. I think you'd have to be on the edge though.

Preventing over rev during "normal" operation is done by cutting fuel or ignition.

Yes NOS. He was hitting mid 13's with NOS and some engine work until he blew the engine.

[B]Thanks for the insight, guys, but I wasn't asking if we could over-rev - just asking why the engine cuts out altogether (fuel cut off?) at 9.2K.
