I bought my car used with 104,000 miles. I knew the clutch was last replaced two years ago, but I assumed it still had a bit of life. The previous owner ripped it while demoing.

The other day I was cruising on the highway, got off, and couldn't get into gear. I wasn't really doing anything special, nothing out of the ordinary, but I couldn't shift.

From the noises it was making we guessed it was just the throwout bearing. We were wrong...




Summary: a pair of springs ripped out of the disc. The larger, outside spring got broken up into a bunch of pieces. The smaller, inside spring got lodged in the pressure plate.

I noticed that the clutch pedal became a lot less stiff, but I assumed it was the bearing. Guess I was wrong.

$730 in parts and labor later, my car is good as new for a great price.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I had changed the clutch. There is very close to 0 friction material left.

You're correct: if you had spent $730 on parts and labor (a great price, I might add) to change your clutch you wouldn't have had to spend $730 parts and labor to replace your clutch a bit later.

I agree. That is a VERY good price for a clutch job for parts AND labor. Anyone else getting them this cheap?
