Windshield Replacement: Generic stronger than OEM?
I have to replace my windshield (9" crack!!
). I've done searching and I've seen lots of complaints about the OEM windshield, while others have said it's not the glass, it's just how low the car is and how upright the windshield is. I dont want to start another bash the windshield thread, I just want opinions (or facts) on whether a non OEM windshield may actually be stronger than the OEM. And beyond authenticity, is there any other reason to get the OEM (like fit and finish)?

I would try to get a reputable installer - the largest is Safelite 9the insurance companies love'm) The problem is that Safelite manufactures their own glass and seals, and it's not always the best quality (my buddies Vette was so distorted, he got headaches from it) They also do a lot of "on the job training" so the workmanship can be all over the place. When i got a crack, I called the two nearest Honda dealers, and the independent Honda service place that I trust for recommendations - they all named one place. After verifying that they were on my insurance's list for windshield repair, I had them do the work. They used a really good PPG windshield (PPG is an OEM supplier for American Honda - not sure if they supply Japanese built cars). When interviewing a shop, ask for either OEM or PPG glass, and DEMAND genuine Honda seals.
I've called 5 places, 2 national (including safelite) and 3 local. There seem to be 3 brands of glass available here, ppg (used in US built Accords), pilkington, and safelite. I was told that the S probably uses a Japanese company, but ppg is probably the best alternative since they do American Honda. I've had quotes from $250 to $420, but the lower ones may not have included the $75 plastic molding they have to order from Honda. Still looking...

The next time you get a crack you should go to one of those windshield repair places.
It cost me 30 bucks to get a nice sized chip repaired!

I have the pilkington on mine. Held up as well as the OEM winshield and still chipped up like crazy. I just got a crack in it though from a rock. I was going to repair it but it spread to fast and now I have to replace it. Another one like it is $280 at a local shop.
I had my OEM windshield replaced with a PPG windshield. Fits perfectly, glass is perfectly clear and not distorted in any way. It seems stronger than the OEM windshield.
My OEM windshield was chipped badly after the first week of ownership. The PPG windshield has held up much better. It is also chipped, but it takes more to chip it than the OEM windshield.
I had the PPG windshield installed for $400. This included everything - genuine Honda seals, installation, etc...

there is a group buy going on for ppg windshield with new molding and installation for 140 (tax included) Lifetime warrany on workmanship, factory warranty on glass.
