thinking of getting a 2000 model. are there any common problems that i should avoid a 2000 model? or i can pretty much bring it in to a dealer and they would fix everything for me under warrantee?
My '00 has been relatively trouble-free; however, several technical service bulletins exist for this model year (https://www.s2ki.com/article/archive/1/). I haven't experienced the second gear grind problem or any clutch problems. I have had my driver's side power window regulator replaced twice and my convertible latches replaced (top rattle) also. Were I buying a used '00 model, I would check on whether or not the various TSBs had been performed. You might also consider an extended warranty. Why not save a bit more and get a brand new '03?
lvs2k identified the most common issues -- 2d gear and latch rattles. There were also Techincal Service Bulletins (TSBs) for the top cover and seat belts. Basically, ask the owner/seller if these have been done. Other than that, check the tires as they wear fast, and the OEM Bridgestone Potenza S-02 work best with the car, and make sure the oil was changed at the recommended intervals.
I figure MY2000 should sell for $24K-$25K... a substantial savings over a new one.
The S2000 is a great car! It is a blast to drive on the freeway. It's very responsive and the handling is near perfect. There is a bit too much bump steer though. It's Honda quality at it's best. Just make sure that you drive it without the pressue of a salesman before you purchase it. I wouldn't get the car if it is your only car though. Also, 02 models have glass rear windows, so if this is important to you, get an 02. Also, please beware that the tires will wear out after about 15,000 miles.
What about 99 model? I'm also planning to buy used s2k, and here in Slovenia second hand market I can choose only for 99 or 00... Are there any main reliability differences between these two years? Is 99 OK? Or should I look for 00?
There wasn't a 99 model but it was MADE in 99 and SOLD in 99 maybe thats what he meant.
As long as the Seat beat recall was done, spark plugs, and the roof cover were done you should be pretty good.
A lot of 2000 owners bought this as something to hang onto thinking it would go up in value and haven't put too many miles on them and took excellent care of them. Now they see the value came down, the car is going into its 4TH YEAR and perhaps a second or third car isn't worth keeping after the end of summer and finanical/economical issues going on.
Make sure the rear window isn't scratched, or that whoever currently owns the car gets it fixed for you. It's rare to a dealer that will do a free rear window replacement anymore (although my local dealer replaced mine for free).
