Would anyone Trade "S" for an M3?
I was very tempted to trade my 97 M3 sedan 5spd for a 02 S but I just couldn't pull the trigger. They're way differnet cars, the S is more agile and a convertible and the M3 has torque and practicality.
I would NEVER trade an E46 M3 for a S2000 though, not even a blown S2000. A late model E36 M3 is more of a match for a S.

I don't know how many of you have owned a BMW, but when I did, I never really felt comfortable with the car in the sense that... you f something up, you are really, really screwed with repair costs.
You know how on older Hondas, the trouble areas are usually CV joints and distributers? Well put about 75 items on that list for a used BMW. They are VERY fragile cars. I remember paying over $300 for a replacement door handle. Just the black plastic handle istelf. Only one of the 75 trouble areas that are common and well known to BMW enthusiasts.
I'd take my S any day. Period.

People who say BMW's are too expensive to maintain either can't do their own work or aren't resourcefull in finding parts. The E36 has been around a long time and the oem/aftermarket part selection is far more vast than the S2000. I autocross and track my M3 as well as daily drive it 12000 miles a year and I haven't had any problems.

I don't think you'd be able to make an S faster than than an M without spending an exorbant amount of money. And then the M would take 1/10th of that and be back ahead.
BTW, I am not biased either way. I own both, and love both dearly. 2 very different cars that -- at least for me -- serve very different purposes. But it doesn't take that much to make an S an M destroyer.

You're focusing on Dyno results. Sure, 300 at the crank (M3 is 333 btw, with 255 lb tq) might be easy thru a supercharger. But a supercharger doesn't get the S2k to 60 in 4.9 Seconds, 100 in 11.5, and 1/4 mile in 13 seconds. The real world performance would be harder to get than the dyno numbers, at least from what I've read, I'm not an S expert though.
If I'm wrong, let me know, because I'd love to make the S as fast as the M3, and is my only "regret" to not buying the M3. I don't think I would need to spend $2500 on suspension in the S either, whereas the M3 would need closer to $3500 to get near the S

why not go turbo on the S... 300rwhp would be easy, and not cost much more...
I agree on the suspension... but with the extra cash you would have left over... why not?

What do you consider exorbitant? For $4K, u can slap a Vortech SC on the S and eat M3's for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

An E46 M3 is one of the few, slightly more expensive cars, that I would trade my S for. I am not even saying a straight trade, more of an upgrade IMO. I love M3's
, especially when they are modded.
I'd trade.
One guy said something about a sc'd S can't turn 13.0 in the 1/4-mile. Whoever that was had better submit themselves for a urine analysis. A stock sc kit won't, but a couple upgrades and you're under 13 with even me driving it!
M3 = sex; S2000 = not so much.
And I personally think I have one of the sexier S's.
