It seems the asking price on some of the S2000s is being dictated on its presumed collector status instead of conforming more to current book value as many other vehicles. It is after all not your average garden variety used car so far as vehicles go.I also think that area and availability play a part as well.Great for current owners, not so good for some prospective buyers.Down here in Corpus ,used S2000s for sale are very sparse to non-exsistant. I don't see them on the road too often either.Had to go to Houston to buy mine.I wish you luck in your search. It's hard not to pull the trigger when you find a clean one,but I have to agree that the intro asking price for this particular one you test drove is out of line. Not sure how far they'd be willing to drop the price as they'll ask whatever thay feel the market will bear.
Check www.autotrader.com .Where do u live? I can do a 300 mile search for you..I say check AUTOTRADER...Here in FloridA, for a 300 mile seArch,65 popped up...I
After owning both I truly don't believe in the following arguments: (1) One is better than the other for daily driving. - False (2) 8k seems lacking compared to 9k. - False It's all in your head. Sure, right after going from AP1 to AP2 I noticed the lack of the 9k but it soon went away after I adjusted and it's perfectly fine.
Alex S2000 mentioned it on the first page as well; they differences are marginal or all in people's heads. It is possible to find an AP2 for around $12k but you will have to be patient and find a seller willing to part with theirs that's in decent condition; otherwise you will be looking at a 2002-2003 AP1 (glass rear window ftw).
Go test drive them both and see which you prefer. You will probably find out the AP2 is slightly more refined with the slightly softer suspension and extra amenities in the cabin. Other than that the difference is in the motor. Best of luck to you!

think about what you are planning to do later. AP2 looks nicer, AP1 has lower mileage and 9k with long gear ratios that might be fun for you.
If you got AP2 and want to change back to 9k with long gears, that would be hectic.
If you got AP1 and you want to change the look. Pretty much easy, specially if you are planning to change the stock wheels anyway. that is also the case for the headlight/taillight. But the wheels have the most effect on the car.

Do ap2 wheels fit on an ap1 with out any adjustments? I'm thinking if i got an ap1 i'd just wait for the tires to go bad, then find a pair of ap1 v1 wheels with decent tread, sell the ap1 wheels and pay the difference for the ap2 set.

I've owned both. They are both awesome. Get the AP1 because you can get lower mileage for the same price. Put on AP2 wheels and a single exhaust. When the top goes bad, get glass. And if you have the carpet console, buy Rick's leather solution. You are going to want to mod it regardless, so get the best deal. And it is cool to say your car revs to 9k, even if it's a little slower than the stroked AP2 motor and more stable suspension.
