I agree that it's fair that people be allowed to get a feel for the site and if they want the added features and feel the desire to help out they can. The only restrictions will be on convieniece features like PMs, subscriptions to forums and threads, email notifications and buddy and ignore lists. Those who choose not to become members and who don't use those features much will notice few changes from the way things are today.
Would a Newbie still be able to PM a Site Sponsor about a purchase ?

cthree,
Looks like some very good ideas, and I support them.

As far as the unpaid members being able to PM a sponsor, it has been my understanding that not all sponsors answer PMs, even some have asked that we use email for communicating. I would think that unpaid members could use the email format to communicate with the sponsors. That way if a sponsor got a PM, he would know he was dealing with a paid member, should he wish to treat them any differently. I also agree that a membership card would not give me any added benefit, and might be something you could pass on and save a few bucks. I might use a small sticker or decal if it was tastefully done. My $$ are ready and waiting.

Some interesting observations:
About 1/3 voted NO outright, although a few indicated they voted NO and now changed their minds.
Except for a handful of people, virtually all who posted "favourable" replies here are "owners", mods, (ie. non-"enthusiasts").
Except for a couple of people (kudos to you), most NO voters have not posted a reply here. (How come?)
What does this tell us?

Yes. Guest members just won't be able to PM other guests. I would make sure that sponsors are not excluded.

I vote "proceed." A decent e-mail account without all the BS on Excite or MSN/Hotmail is a substantial bennie I would appreciate, and space for a website for family to see pictures, etc. would save me from hosting fees some of us already pay. People seem to like stickers, but that kind of stuff (member cards, pins, and such) would be wasting resources IMO. Sooner buy some more hard drives or bandwidth. Like mentioned earlier, owning a $35K toy car, $400 radar detectors, $85 car badges--I think most of "us" can come up with $20 / $50 / $75 to support this site. Where do we sign up and pay up?

CTHREE,

i tend to agree with most people here that membership cards and such are really just defeating the object - we need funds to maintain the site, and in all reality, these "perks" will not really benefit me - pens will get lost, cards will not get put in wallets etc etc. The best idea would be to sink the money into the site or to provide funding for future ventures, or even group buys - bit like a subsidy scheme.

if there are to be any membership perks in the form of tangible goods then make it something worth while and cost effective - something that we can all use - maybe a t shirt (these are relatively cheap now) or a baseball cap.

i know this is a hard task, and in making any decision like this you will inevitably annoy people (IMO those who want something for nothing) but i think that you have the support of most people on here - we have to be realistic and you are definately moving in the right direction.
