if I were buying used between the two, id look at the AP2's because of all the AP1 retainer horror stories and not knowing if the previous owner over-revved it. That would be my biggest concern as a used buyer.
Just so new or potential AP1 owners don't freak out we need to say a little more about this.

It takes only a few minutes to inspect the retainers, and if you have a few hand tools you can do it yourself. The inspection is only necessary when you buy a used car or have a mechanical over rev, but because there are still some unswered questions about the retainers the current advice from the gurus is to inspect the retainers a something like 60,000 mile intervals, more or less. It's only a problem for people who miss shifts.

However, in the US we missed a bunch of them, so Honda gave us the F22C. Anyone who thinks that's just BS needs to talk to Billman, and anyone who thinks Billman is full of grap needs to get a cat scan.

if ap1 with 9k rpm was so good and better than the 8k rpms of the ap2 why did their makers (honda) itself change the f20 to f22, so go figure. honda spent million to make the s2000 as perfect as possible, so i will say and agree to pipol who says newer s2k's are good and you cant go wrong with getting it. about a year an half ago i purchased a 2001 s2k and did some mods to it, but after a testdrive on an 06 s2k, i knew i was sold to it, and now i have an 06 sk w/ dbw.

dude, that statement is very uninformed. Did you read all of the posts in this thread? The 8k motor was made because of the different American driving style. IMO it is a more advanced, stroked version of the 9k motor, but that's just my opinion.

This is coming from an AP1 driver too - If I could have the "perfect" s2000 it'd be the 00 model year with 8k motor. I don't like the aesthetic changes, inside or outside on the AP2. I'd just rather have the more "driveable" motor.

While it is true that 8<9, you can't ignore the fact that 2000<2200, and you get it wrong when you fail to tell the whole story.

Half truths are the basis of most of the crap that is posted in this kind of thread.

yes i read all of it, repeating what they said would make me sound im just copying what the others said, so i just added a general and broad response. and yeah the ap2 is more driver friendly and is not as raw as the ap1. i just love that little extra comfortable feel ap2 give vs. the ap1, and still go fast as the ap1 or maybe faster (depending on the driver). again i had owned both cars and base on experience i will take an ap2 over the ap1.

have u guys seen the 2 yellow s2k battle that the best motoring did. it showed that the ap2 was better than ap1, or it could be just the driver coz drift king was driving the ap2 and orido was driving the ap1. but thru out that 3-5lap race the ap2 was ahead of the ap1.

also, i saw 1 video in youtube, i think its " f20 vs. f22" on both ap2 cars, and then again the ap2 with f22 engine won over the ap2 with f20 engine. so i guez thats a proof enough that ap2 is a better overall car out of the box for most people.

but wtf, ap1 or ap2,i doesnt really matter which1 is better JUST GO fOr WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD AND PREFER. most of us modify the ap1 and ap2 after we got them, ryt? so it all depend on ur mods that u gonna do to the car and also your driving skills, and then thats how you can be faster than the other s2k owners, or other cars out there.

BUT I STILL LOVE ANY KIND OF S2K AND WONT BUY ANY OF THE CONTEMPORARY CARS OUT THERE (PORSCHE BOXTER, 350Z, MIATA, SATURN RAODSTER, SOLSTICE, EVO, STI,ETC.)

I drove a few ap1s and a few ap2s before i made my decision. It all comes down to preference.

I've never understood the urine stream badge, but remember, Honda shifted the whole power band to lower rpms with the AP2 - its like getting to stand closer to the urinal when you piss.

And, speaking of pissing contests, anyone notice how everyone loves the APx that they have? Doesn't seem like anyone is not happy with their car, and if everyone is so content to argue that their car is the best, that points to a deeper loyalty to their car - people love their S2000s no matter what year or model they own.

That aside, very few people have answered the OP's questions appropriately.
