Don't forget that you don't need snow on the ground to need winter tires; that's why they're called winter tires.

Did you check to make sure you didn't hit any water 2 to 3 minutes before you made it to the stop sign? If your tires were still wet or even damp, this can act like ice when shifting hard into second. Just a thought.
