xviper -

It would seem your unofficial membership drive has already borne fruit. I'd like to add my thanks to everyone who ponied up to join, renew, or upgrade. Good job!

Great thread xviper.

I was pleased to see the site go slow or go down today but only because I suspected that it was due to the new equipment coming on line.

The actual numbers are more like:

450 Gold Members
1600 Basic Members
8000 active Guests (posted this year at least once).
That's a much better member/freeloader ratio than my local public radio station.

Add one more upgrade from Member to Gold.
I can relate to server problems.

I haven't read the entire thread yet, so I don't know if this has been mentioned yet. I've been a gold member for some time now, and if there was a platinum membership ($100???) I'd gladly participate in that. I figure I get WAY more out of this site than what I pay for membership, and I'm happy to contribute to the maximum membership level to help keep the site funded.

Great thread--I've been a regular member for two years now due to the good advice I have gotten from many of the credible posters on the site. I have not read the entire thread--just the first 3 pages or so. I got tired reading all the 'thumbsup' posts.

Anyways, I have to say that I sort of agree with a few things that Detroit mentioned on page 1 I think. I think this is a great community, however I think that it might be worth it to increase the membership costs like $5 or something to get some better control over some of the 'junk posts.'

I think another option besides making paid memberships 'mandatory' is to severely limit the forums to guests.

A response to the few posts on this thread that challenge Xviper's appeal.

I pay for something that I could get for free because it is the right thing to do; because I want to be a part of something; and because I want to give back.

You really can't justify selfishness with logic. If you refuse to contribute to something worthwhile because you can get it for free, you are using money as the scorecard for your life. There are better ways to measure how well you are doing.

You can keep the $50 in your pocket, or you could help this community continue, prosper and grow. If you can't afford a membership, you are welcome here. If you can, please join us and be a part of something good.
