I build both f20c and the vq35 and I have to tell you the F20c is a much better design . Stock for stock the f20c can take more abuse and is much more mod friendly. I have more people with blown VQ35 than f20c. The VQ is a production motor built to accommodate many platforms ,the f20 was made for one purpose and one platform . Honda didn't cut any corners on the engineering behind the f20 .

Plus the VQ motor is huge when it is all put together.

I just rebuilts a vq and turned the key on it today. Original motor had 6000miles on it . It came to me from a friend . It is equipped with a Vortech supercharger . The bottom end went, all the rod bearings are junk. Crank was trashed ,cams were scored and the heads are junk. $8000 later...............

We have thought about trying a Landrover 4.0 v8

Z motor would be a waste on the S, you should do something special like a RB26 or SR20. If you put a Z in a S, why not just BUY a Z, pretty much the same.
I would kill to know if this has ever been done. I had a dream about a month ago that my buddy and I were swapping an RB26 into my S. Needless to say the next morning i needed to change the sheets.

RB26 may be far fetched but is an SR20 realistic?

Putting the Z engine in the S sounds like a complete waste... just get a supercharger. It'll be cheaper, easier, and awesome performance.

The engine swap would completely throw off the balance of the car.

Why not do a Ford 5.0 v8 with a Kenny Bell supercharger on it. They have a kit for the Mazda Miata in this configuration. It fits like a glove!

I saw this Miata at one of the Ford Nationals a few years back at it looked bone stock sans the sick v8 rumble and supercharger whine.

I'm pretty sure the S has double the room the Miata has under the hood for this swap.

Sounds like you need to wait and see what happens with the BRP roots supercharger kit. That'll make it feel like a V6.

I say go for it. I'd love to hear some feedback and see some pics of someone finally doing an engine swap to the s.
