Default 10w40 weight oil

My buddy is offering my 7 quarts for cheap. I live in California. Will it be okay to use or should I pass? I've been using the recommended viscosity (Mobil 1) with oem filter. I burn quite a bit, so I'm thinking about switching it up.

You don't need to run a viscosity that high, though it will work and I'm sure your oil consumption might drop running it. I ran amsoil 5w40 for one season, the engine ran nice and smooth and quite, consumption was pretty low. This season I'm running 5w30 amsoil to see how it compares. You can try running it for one oil change interval and see how you like it, compared to your other oil runs, it wouldnt hurt having the used oil analyzed at the end of the run if you do choose to run it. I'm a big fan of amsoil either way.

10W-40.. are you living in the 90's?

Its 2011 you know.
5W-30 or 0W-30 is the way to go for just about every car in just about every climate right now.

Sure, the 10W-40 will work, no doubt.

It will be fine for one oil change interval, then switch over to 5w-30.
