I know this topic is all over every S2000 forum out there but I had to post this info up. I dont know if this is a repost, Ive searched with no matches. I was browsing on Honda.com and found the specifications for the 09 S2000. The engine oil capacity would be the same for all of the AP2s(and probably AP1s...I have not checked part#s), since they have the same oil pan/baffle part #s and engine as the 09s. So maybe our owners manuals are wrong, OR maybe honda decided to change the oil capacity because some owners dont check their oil as they should. I dont know, but heres what I found. Click the link.

They have regularly taken 5.5 to 6 quarts to put the oil on the top X of the dipstick. The owners manual has been wrong for years.

Yea, I heard of the manual being wrong. But what Im getting at is why did Honda say 5.1qts and then turn around and say 5.9qts. when nothing within the engine changed. I guess I was just looking for the 5.5-6qts in writing from honda rather than just hearing or reading that other owners put that in their cars, yet the manual has a different spec.

5.9L has always been the stated capacity of the system.

5.1L is the recommend level to add when changing the oil and filter.

Whenever I have changed my oil, it's been somewhay closer to 5.1 than 5.9. I think about 5.2 would get you about half way up the Xs. A lot depends on the how flat the ground is and how long it's been since the engine has been run.

If you go to a Jiffy Lube type place, 5.1 is probably adequate since the very nature of these places is to get you out as quickly as possible.
5.1 qts is not going to be enough if you do a through drain of 30 minutes or longer.

The manual also tells you to check (confirm) the engine oil level by looking at the dipstick.

Its safe to say that the engine (AP2) holds 5 liters. So just add 9 ounces after you added 5 QUARTS of oil. Assuming you changed the oil filter and used a oil filter that is OEM or the same size as OEM and no other modifications that affect the over all capacity of the oil level. Also make sure you let the oil drain for a while before buttoning up the drain plug. If you add just 5 quarts it should put your oil level between the ADD and FULL marks on the stick. It is your preference as to where you feel comfortable driving the vehicle with the oil level less than FULL but above the ADD level.

5 liters equals 169 ounces.
5 quarts equals 160 ounces.
This is approx. 5.3 quarts.

I had a hell of a time seeing oil on the dipstick after my first oil change - I ended up filling up to roughly 5.5 quarts and finally saw oil on the stick one x below the full line.

5.0 quarts works everytime for me, and that's after a 2 hour drain.

if you take the engine totally apart and re-build it that engine will need 5.9 quarts to fill it up , or possibly more. If you pull the drain plug off for 2 minutes like most oil change places do it may take closer to 5.1 quarts. If you let the engine drain all night you will need a larger fill amount as well. Also don't confuse litres with quarts they are different measurements. Honda messed up on the dipstick readings, so don't expect the owner's manual to be 100% correct on the fill amounts. BTW, I also find it very hard to read the dipstick on fresh oil, I need to check it and stare at it in bright light to get somewhat of a consistent reading.
